MACT Monday Script Storytelling: Capturing the Music
“Sometimes true challenge lies not in the long, inspired texts, but in those brief lines where so many are told in such a limited state!
Vicente was an amazing character to translate throughout the play. He is very charming, theatrical and the way he talks about himself and others was often hilarious.
He would be quick to talk, and swift to express his point. Nonetheless, hidden underneath, Vicente hid a big translation challenge: he decided to entertain us with some singing!
Music is all about beats, right? Though I have no formal studies in music, that discipline is similar to poetry, in the sense that both share rhythm: and the key to understand them both are syllables. Although Spanish and English vary in the way they count their syllables, one can still make them match by adding just the correct words… in the correct order to preserve Garro’s original music, which we managed to convey!” - Isabel Hermosillo, Translator
“Spanish, in its nature, is effortlessly poetic and when transferring such a piece to English we have to be very meticulous to find the correct sentence structure that brings that beauty, melody as well as the information being communicated by every character.
Much like a musician composing a song, we must match the tones and waves that Elena crafted in order to create an equivalent interpretation of such poetry.” - Francisco Rodriguez, Artistic Director
