What a group can do on a Tuesday evening is mostly decided before anyone arrives.

One rehearsal a week is barely enough time to fit parts together, and in the rooms I work in a good share of that hour goes to something else: people learning their own notes in company. That part does not need the room. It needs one person, a recording, and somewhere quiet.

So ask for something specific and small between rehearsals. Not a general request to look over the music. One page, one part, by the night before. The evening then gets spent on the work that actually requires everybody in the same place.

Groups almost never break up over the music.

I have watched a lot of them end, and the reason is almost always a calendar. Someone takes a job with evening shifts, someone has a baby, two people move across town, and the rehearsal that used to be automatic turns into something that has to be renegotiated every week. The singing was fine. What was never built was the scaffolding that lets an ordinary year of ordinary lives happen without the group quietly stopping.

The ones that last are not the most talented rooms I have stood in. They are the ones that decided early what happens when three people cannot make it, and then kept singing anyway.

Singers find their favorite rooms by accident. A stairwell after rehearsal. A parking garage on the way to the car. The shower, obviously.

Hard surfaces are generous. The sound hangs on a beat longer, and for a few seconds you sound like the singer you are trying to become.

Notice that nobody ever names a concert hall. The rooms we fall for were never built for music. They are the ones with no audience in them, where the voice is just for you.

Keep your accidental room. Sing in it this week. Practice builds the voice, but that room is what keeps you in love with it.

People tell me all the time that they cannot sing harmony. What they usually mean is that they cannot hold their part while someone next to them sings a different one.

That is not a limit you were born with. It is a stage, and every singer you admire passed through it.

Start by singing your line alone until it is boring. Then sing it quietly against a recording of the other part. Then stand next to the strongest singer on your part, not next to the melody.

Three steps, a few weeks apart. Nobody is born doing this. We all built it the same way, one line at a time.
