You speak to me of faith and the church you attend. The most important faith will be the way you feel about it within you. Don't ever let anyone tell you that it is too unsophisticated to think about such things. For it is the very basis on which you draw your breath. Without faith there's no hope. The most beautiful thing about life is that we can begin it anew each day. We need to forget every unpleasant thing that has ever happened to us, every shallow thing that has no meaning, every unkind word or deed or thought and start all over again. And the only possible way to do it is by faith. Faith. Faith in yourself, faith in others, faith in God, and faith that right will win. And facetiously stated, "Them that has, gits." If you have a little faith it will attract more - if you know about it within you.

"All of us begin to rethink what is good about ourselves - put the past where it belongs - and get on with the possibilities of the present!" --Howard Rainer, TAOS PUEBLO-CREEK– There is a saying, you move toward and become that which you think about. So the question for today is, what are you thinking about? Are you thinking bad things about yourself or are you thinking good things about yourself? Are you thinking about a worldly life? Are you thinking good things about people or are you gossiping about people? Are you focusing on past things or are you living in the future? We need to bring our thoughts into the NOW, right here. Great Spirit, let me experience living in the present moment.

"Search for the truth. Indian values teach the holistic approach to the use of technology for mankind's good." --Al Qoyawayma, HOPI– The Great Spirit had given us certain values to live by. If we learn to think in harmony with these values such as respect, love, patience, tolerance, commitment, trust, etc., we cannot get off track. No matter what we do, we will always be in harmony. For example, if we are respectful, then we will respect the earth, our children, our women, our men and ourselves. Indian values help us walk under the guidance of the Great Spirit. My Creator, today I search for the truth, Your truth. Please let me see it.

At night sometimes the world seems so topsy-turvy and you're so weary of doing things the same old way. Then nothing seems to please....You try desperately for something new and different, something that doesn't seem so much like you. Why? Tonight you are different. One cannot expect the world to be top side up all the time. Such perfection does not come so easily to human nature. And always there is a search for something new and different. A change of pace....that thought that I don't want to be me today, to think my thoughts and do my daily chores. I want to make a complete change now, to know a whole new way of life. And it is good to leave behind the many daily situations that sometimes stand too closely to be seen clearly, but to be wise enough to know which things should be left behind. There have been clean sweeps that have left behind the dearest things....and have taken along the same dreary, dark unhappy things of the mind that should have been left behind. A line from the prayer of serenity is "The wisdom to know the difference....." And wisdom, says Samuel Taylor Coleridge, is common sense in an uncommon degree. If one has the wisdom to wait a bit, wait until morning - or several mornings - that uncommon degree of common sense will give us the wisdom to know the difference.

"Life is like a path...and we all have to walk the path... As we walk...we'll find experiences like little scraps of paper in front of us along the way. We must pick up those pieces of scrap paper and put them in our pocket... Then one day we will have enough scraps of papers to put together and see what they say... Read the information and take it to heart." --Uncle Frank Davis (quoting his mother) PAWNEE– The Creator designed us to learn by trial and error. The path of life we walk is very wide. Everything on the path is sacred - what we do right is sacred - but our mistakes are also sacred. This is the Creator's way of teaching spiritual people. To criticize ourselves when we make mistakes is not part of the spiritual path. To criticize mistakes is not the Indian way. To learn from our mistakes is the Indian way. The definition of a spiritual person is someone who makes 30-50 mistakes each day and talks to the Creator after each one to see what to do next time. This is the way of the Warrior. Today let me see my mistakes as a positive process. Let me learn the aha's of life... Awaken my awareness so I can see the great learning that You my Creator have designed for my life.

Good ideas are the flower of the mind, waiting to bloom for the benefit of the thinker. We are constantly in the process of manufacturing ideas. Every waking moment we are thinking continually, making mental images of that which we desire or need. Everything we see was first an idea in someone's mind. Ideas are fleeting messages that pass rapidly through the mind. Some of them are strong enough to impress the thinker. Many are not worth saving, but a few are very precious. They have to be sifted, sorted and analyzed for value. Then they must be acted on immediately, for they are very perishable. Once we lose an idea, it is seldom if ever recaptured. Everyone has access to a better and happier life through ideas, if we can trust the Lord to give us the will and courage to follow through on them.

π—•π—˜π—¦π—§ 𝗣𝗛𝗒𝗧𝗒 of frontier cowboys? Circa 1884, Tombstone (AZ) photographer C.S. Fly made the portrait of cowhands working for β€˜Texas’ John Slaughter, legendary gunslinger, gambler, cattleman, and sheriff. The men wore hats with large, flat round brims and smooth uncreased crowns, unlike TV cowboys. At least five had leather chaps and gunbelts with revolvers. Two wore button bib shirts, which provided a bit of wind protection and could hold to***co supplies. Hats were tilted back to expose faces. The seated man at the right was on a lower surface, making him appear shorter. -Gary Coffrin

- Background information -
Lensman C.S. Fly began photographing Southeastern Arizona in 1879, the same year that L.A. Huffman, my favorite documentarian of cowboy life on the open range, began photographing Eastern Montana.

Standing, L to R: James C. Pursley (founding partner in Feb. 1885 of Chiricahua Cattle Co., the famous CCC outfit), Walter Thompson Fife (his parents had a ranch near the Riggs ranch) and James G. Maxwell (later owner of a large ranch and mine).
Seated, L to R: William β€˜Billy’ Monroe Riggs (Cochise County ranch family), James H. McClure (Cochise County rancher) and John Blake (later a prosperous rancher and businessman).
The print is held by National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

True West magazine publicized this as β€œBest Cowboy Photo.” TW focuses on the Southwest, but photographers elsewhere made great photos of working cowboys as well. L.A. Huffman, O.S. Goff, John Grabill, and C.D. Kirkland spring immediately to mind.

I spent a full day researching the image and using Photoshop to clean and sharpen the print. The source file is at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
