First Friday is still on for tomorrow.

This month will be simple and easygoing — more of an open gallery night than a big production.

No live music this time.

Just artwork on the walls, music in the background, a drink to share, and a place to take a breath at the end of the week.

Labor Day weekend may pull people in a lot of directions, but if you’re nearby and want a quiet place to land, we’d be happy to see you.

This is where an image starts becoming a possibility.

Number 12 began as a photograph of a weathered blue door in Honfleur.

Then came the details.

The lock.
The threshold.
The worn paint.
The stone.
The life growing into the cracks.

Each smaller piece started carrying its own weight.

That’s when the image became more than a single photograph.

It became a study.

A doorway.
A witness.
A collection of smaller stories held inside one larger one.

This is part of what I love about developing artwork for a space.

Sometimes one image is enough.

Other times, the details ask to come along too.

A little gallery note as we move toward the end of August:

First Friday returns next week. September 4 from 7-8:30pm.

Details are still coming together, but the date is on the calendar and the doors will be open.

These gatherings matter because they keep the gallery from becoming a quiet room full of finished things.

They bring people in.
They start conversations.
They help people spend time around art before they know exactly what they’re looking for.

And sometimes, that is where collecting begins.

Not with pressure.

With presence.

Buying art often does not start with certainty.

Instead, it starts with noticing.

An image keeps pulling your attention.
A color feels familiar.
A doorway reminds you of something you can’t quite name.
A texture feels like a place you’ve been, or a season you’re in.

That is often enough to begin.

You don’t have to know the exact size.
You don’t have to know the medium.
You don’t have to know where it will live yet.

That’s part of what we help with.

At Behn Gallery, the process can start simply:

You notice something.
We talk about it.
We look at the space.
We explore what it could become.

Sometimes that leads to a small print.
Sometimes a framed piece.
Sometimes a large custom installation.

But it usually begins with the same quiet thing:

Today’s Pull: Number 12

This door in Honfleur has been sitting in my mind for a couple of years.

I don’t think it stayed with me because it was perfect.

It stayed because it wasn’t.

The paint is worn.
The stone is uneven.
The wood carries time.
The threshold feels both fragile and cared for.

And still, there is life growing around it.

As I spent more time with the image, I started seeing the doorway less as an object and more as a witness.

Every scratch, broken edge, rusted surface, and worn step could hold a different story.

Someone arriving.
Someone leaving.
A family moving in.
A friend returning.
A child growing up.
A thousand ordinary days passing through the same threshold.

That’s what keeps pulling me back.

A lock can become a timepiece.
A threshold can become an archive.
A doorway can become a storyteller.

Sometimes photography helps reveal where time becomes visible.

And sometimes an ordinary place contains far more human history than we notice at first glance.

Sometimes seeing an image on a wall changes the conversation.

A file becomes a possibility.
A possibility becomes a piece.
A piece becomes something someone could live with.

This is part of the process.

Today I opened an old folder thinking I might spend time with images from Monet’s Garden.

Instead, I ended up in Saint-Malo.

That’s often how inspiration works.

You start in one place, and if you’re paying attention, the work takes you somewhere else.

This image comes from the timber structures along the seawall, built for function, shaped by water, salt, algae, weather, and time.

What caught me was the order and the imperfection.

The repeated lines.
The disruption.
The organic color.
The feeling that nature had taken something man-made and slowly started painting over it.

Abstract work often gives space to things I don’t fully know how to explain.

A feeling.
A rhythm.
A question.
Something unnamed that still feels real.

I’m thinking about making this a more regular practice...pulling one image forward, spending time with it, mocking it up, and seeing whether it deserves to become something physical.

Maybe I’ll call it Today’s Pull.

For now, this one found me again.

Last Friday was a good reminder of why we keep opening the doors.

Dave Bagdade filled the room with folk, Irish, original, and traditional music — and people listened, clapped, talked, laughed, and stayed awhile.

That matters.

Not every gathering is measured by sales.
Some are measured by atmosphere.
By connection.
By people feeling welcome in a space they may not have otherwise entered.

Of course, the artwork is here to be lived with.
That’s always the hope — that someone connects deeply enough to take a piece home and let it become part of their daily life.

But even before that happens, something important can still take place.

People gather around art.
They slow down.
They listen.
They notice.

That is part of what Behn Gallery is here to do.
