Some of the first pieces I worked on I was looking to just finish something that I would be willing to show people. One of the easiest wins with acrylic’s is definitely the fading sunset.🌅

On the streets of Arusha Tanzania artists and vendors display a variety of Massai cultural works. The simple forms are used to create an image quickly and repeatably so many artists and craftsman can generate sellable pieces. The cost of these items in no way reflects the full depth of what it means to share their ancient tribal culture with the western world.

I lost track of time as I walked through Walter Ufer’s A Place in the Sun Exhibition at the Denver Art Museum. Walter moved to Toas to get away from the hectic city life and became captivated by the Pueblo Indians and their culture. His works are both stunning and deeply important as records of Native American heritage. Each portrait captures a feeling that lets the audience feel somewhat of a personal relationship with the subject.

When I first started painting my favorite subject was underwater reef scenes that reminded me of my days as a dive master in Australia.🐡🐙🐠 With a colorful pallet and lots of unique lighting challenges it was also a good subject to better understand the techniques involved. When looking back at earlier works and seeing things I would like to fix I try to keep a positive mindset about the real goal of constantly improving and how much you learn from just trying.😅

The guerrilla street art style popularized by British street artist Bansky offers humorous windows into our society. Often political in nature the works always evoke a question in the viewers mind about the rigid societal structure we often don’t realize we are accepting in our everyday lives.🤯

Before there was selfies🤳 there was self portraits and this detailed etching of Rembrandt and his wife Sakia holds many of the same elements of they way we take out pics today📸. His clothing is selected to demonstrate being a 17th contemporary Amsterdam gentleman and his wife’s facial expression even captures a sense of vanity and pride for her man and his talents as he holds a port-crayon🖍 in his hand. They’re letting everyone in town know “that’s right, we got those fancy hats”💅

Art class was the only class that ever I loved and hated. Many years later I now understand that creativity is only the beginning and mastering techniques of the mediums is required to both bring you minds eye to life as well further deepen what makes the work artistic.

“You talking to me?”😂 A statue of David, the Biblical hero who slayed the giant Goliath, had been ordered in 1464. This commission went to Agostino, and a huge slab of marble was extracted from the Carrara quarries in Tuscany, Italy, for the project. For unknown reasons Agostino abandoned the project after doing only a little work, mostly roughing out around the legs. Many years later Michelandelo found the stone sitting unfinished and made it the masterpiece we treasure today.
