Asian Story Theater

Asian Story Theater AST celebrates and broadens cultural understanding by dramatizing Asian and Pacific Island stories Additional productions followed each year.

Asian Story Theater began in 1989, dramatizing Chinese folk tales as a project sponsored by the San Diego Chinese Center. The first production was The White Snake (1989-90), presented at the Lyceum Space Theatre and subsequently toured to county schools, libraries, and recreation centers. In 1991 the company staged it's first adaptation based on the 16th century fantasy novel Journey to the West,

featuring the Monkey King. In 1995 the company incorporated as the Asian Story Theater, independent of the San Diego Chinese Center, to diversify programming and expand touring operations to San Francisco and Los Angeles. Each year since, we have produced at least one production in pursuit of our mission. Touring and scale of production has varied widely, depending on funding, talent, and venue availability. Ongoing challenges in working with school audiences have led us to increasingly diverse efforts, this year including a full-length musical about the artist Paul Gauguin (August-September 2011), as well as partnering to produce a pilot television episode, based on our 2006 project Shave Ice (December 2011). We are also commmitted to continuing a series of relatively small, annual theater productions related to the Lunar New Year Celebrations--for at least the next 6 years!

Announcing "Big Money"- a New Show Coming Soon...

๐Ÿ๏ธAn Irish sailor finds unexpected business success on Yap, a remote Micronesian island. For centuries, outsiders tried to claim this land, but Oโ€™Keefeโ€™s story challenges the idea that newcomers can โ€œfixโ€ or truly own places with deep local histories. His real-life adventure shows why the myth of the White Savior doesnโ€™t hold upโ€”and reminds us to question who gets to tell these stories.

Thank you Donna Lee for thinking of Asian Story Theater and gifting us with some beautiful fabrics collected by Kay Fung that we can use for our productions. Kay lived a wonderful and full life, very active in the Chinese Community in San Diego. We will think of her as we use these fabrics.

Meet Antaria - a writer, actor, dramaturg, and occasional producer whose creative practice is rooted in q***r joy, messy growth, and communal repair. A proud q***r Filipino-American and first-gen storyteller, Antaria approaches artmaking as an act of healingโ€”for self and others. Whether on stage, behind the camera, or at the writersโ€™ table, their work explores identity, intergenerational dialogue, and the liminal spaces between cultures.

They are excited to debut with Asian Story Theater as Suho (THE GREAT HORSE OF MONGOLIA). Previous stage performances of EVERYDAY VANILLA (Square Pen) and recent film work includes "Fam De Ube" (48HR Film Project and The FilAm Film Collective).

They believe in holding space for underrepresented voices without tokenization, and view collaboration as a sacred act of resistance and love. Through performance, writing, and dramaturgy, Antaria is committed to crafting stories that challenge, nourish, and connect usโ€”especially across communities too often silenced.
