Iran War Update

We are now on day seven of this conflict.

As you may know, the Iran war began on 28 February, when the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran, targeting top government officials and military sites.

Iran’s Supreme Leader was killed on the first day of the war. This created a leadership vacuum at the worst possible time. Trump hoped that the death of the Supreme Leader would inspire the people of Iran to rise against their government. However, this has not happened. The Iranian government remains in power. An interim council is currently running the country while the leadership decides who will succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as the next Supreme Leader.

American and Israeli airstrikes continue across Iran. Military targets have been hit, and some civilian places such as hospitals and markets have also been damaged. Iran says more than 1 000 of its citizens have died, and thousands more have been injured.

The United States has also suffered losses. Several American soldiers have reportedly been killed in drone attacks as Iran fights back, targeting American embassies, military bases, and other sites in the region.

The water space between Iran and Oman (Strait of Hormuz), remains heavily disrupted. This is the route used by oil tankers leaving the oil countries (Gulf states). Iran is stopping the smooth flow of oil through this area, and many tankers are no longer passing through. This significantly affects global oil supply because gulf countries are basically the gas station of the world.

Oil prices have now risen to over eighty dollars per barrel. When oil prices rise, fuel, food, and transport all become more expensive. Poor countries that depend on imported oil suffer the most.

Meanwhile, an armed group called Hezbollah continues firing rockets into northern Israel. Hezbollah is trained and funded by Iran. What makes the situation even more complicated is that Hezbollah functions as a political party in Lebanon. So Israel has responded by bombing targets inside Lebanon. The army of Israel has even sent ground forces into Lebanon and taken control of several villages. A senior Hezbollah commander has reportedly been killed. The United Nations says nearly 100,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Lebanon. At the same time, tens of thousands of Syrian refugees living in Lebanon have fled back to Syria.

Moreover, the conflict appears to have spread even further. A drone attack allegedly from Iran has taken place in a country called Azerbaijan. This country shares one of its borders with Russia.

Azerbaijan is located at the boundary between Europe and Asia. This boundary between Europe and Asia also passes through Russia, which is why part of Russia is considered to be in Europe while another part is in Asia.

Other countries that share borders with Azerbaijan are Georgia and Armenia. Together, these three countries are part of a region known as the CAUCASUS REGION.

The Caucasus region is a very strategic area between Europe and Asia. Many oil and gas pipelines pass through this region. Therefore heavy fighting in this area could disrupt energy supplies and push global oil prices even higher than they already are.

What has happened is that, the government of Azerbaijan accuses Iran of launching a drone attack, hitting an airport and a nearby village on Azerbaijan soil. Iran completely denies this. It says Israel may have staged the attack in order to damage relations between Iran and Azerbaijan.

However there has already been tension between the two countries for many years. Azerbaijan has a close relationship with Israel and buys many Israeli weapons and drones. Iran believes that Israel’s intelligence agency, (Mossad), sometimes uses Azerbaijani territory to carry out operations against Iran, such as spying or attacks on Iranian targets. Iran sees this as a serious security threat.

As I said in my previous article, no country wants to be neighbors with a friend of its enemy. That is one of the reasons Russia does not want Ukraine to become closely aligned with the United States or to join NATO.

Azerbaijan is not considered part of the Middle East. This is concerning because should this trend continue, it would mean the conflict is spreading beyond the Middle East and moving into other regions.

Trump has said there is no clear end date for the conflict. The United States says it wants Iran’s missile program, naval power, and nuclear activities removed before serious negotiations can begin.

For now, there is no ceasefire. Airstrikes continue. More people are dying. Prices are rising. And the effects of this war are being felt across the world.

Iran War update

We are now on day four of this conflict. As we all know, the United States and Israel are conducting joint military operations targeting top Iranian officials and strategic infrastructure. During the opening phase of the war, Iran’s Supreme Leader was killed in an airstrike.

However Iran is fighting back very hard. It has bombed American targets and military bases in several countries that are known as GULF STATES.
These countries include:

▪️Saudi Arabia
▪️United Arab Emirates
▪️Qatar
▪️Iraq
▪️Bahrain
▪️Kuwait
▪️Oman

These countries are called Gulf states because they are located along the PERSIAN GULF.

The Persian gulf is a large body of water located between Iran and the Gulf States. Remember the Gulf States are the countries listed above.

Those countries matter a lot to the world. Together, they produce about one-third of all the oil we use globally. Saudi Arabia alone pumps out over ten million barrels a day.
When they get hit, prices go up fast. Gulf nations aren't just countries; they're the world's gas station.

What's even worse is that Iran is now disrupting traffic in an area called the STRAIT OF HORMUZ.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman.

You see,
When oil ships leave the Gulf countries, they pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran says it will attack any vessel trying to pass. So now ships are scared to go through the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic has dropped significantly. If it stays blocked, oil can't flow out easily from the Gulf states. As we speak, oil prices are skyrocketing.

Oil controls the global economy. It is the blood of economic activity. Higher oil prices make transport and production more expensive. Oil is used for fuel, electricity, factories, farming, and shipping. So when oil becomes expensive, many other things also become expensive. Poor countries suffer the most because they buy fuel from other countries. They also do not have enough money to handle sudden price increases.

The Strait of Hormuz isn't owned by one country. Iran controls the north side, Oman controls the south. It's supposed to be open to all ships under international rules. Oman stays neutral, it doesn't pick sides between Israel and Iran. In fact, Oman often helps in sorting things out between Iran and other countries but it hasn't been spared in Iran's retaliatory strikes.

By the way, some of the Gulf States are American allies (Saudi Arabia and UAE). Iran hates that a lot. It sees it as encirclement. In geopolitics, no country wants to be neighbors with a friend of the enemy.

Meanwhile, an organization called HEZBOLLAH, which is based in Lebanon, has started firing hundreds of rockets and missiles into northern Israel in retaliation for the death of the Iranian Supreme Leader. Israel has responded by launching counter attacks inside Lebanon, further escalating the war into a full blown regional crisis.

Incase you didn't know, Hezbollah is a powerful Shia militant group and political party in Lebanon. It is backed, trained and funded by Iran. This group is actually more like Iran's armed wing outside its borders. It has been clashing with Israel for a long time.

💥Why is Iran bombing Gulf States?

Iran wants to make the war so expensive that the United States and Israel will feel forced to stop attacking and start negotiating. At the same time, Iran knows that higher oil prices hurt everyone, including its allies. So it hopes that the whole world feels the pain and starts pressing America and Israel to seek a negotiated solution. Not because everyone loves Iran, but because no one wants the Strait of Hormuz closed or fuel costs to keep rising.

However, if Donald Trump's latest statements are anything to go by, then this conflict is not wrapping up soon. Yesterday he said the plan was four to five weeks, but added that America can go far longer than that if needed. He threatened to unleash unlimited, ferocious strikes until Iran's missiles, navy and nuclear program are destroyed. There is no real talk of a ceasefire yet. It seems Trump is open to talks with whoever takes over in Iran, but only after the current government of Iran is either removed or significantly weakened.

This war has also caused a minor diplomatic rift between the UK and the USA. President Trump criticized the UK Prime Minister, saying he was too slow to allow the United States to use British bases for attacks on Iran. He described the delay as frustrating.

The UK Prime Minister responded by saying that Britain would not commit troops unless the action was lawful and there was a clear plan for what would happen afterward. He added that the UK does not want to repeat past mistakes like the 2003 invasion of Iraq, which removed Saddam Hussein from power. This just shows you how complicated and far reaching this conflict is.

I am sure by now we all know that the Supreme Leader of Iran was killed in a major military attack carried out by Israel together with the United States.

I am going to explain why this is happening in very simple English, so that anyone who knows nothing about politics can understand.

As you may know, Israel and Iran are both in the Middle East.

The Middle East is a group of countries in Western Asia. These countries include:

▪ Iran
▪ Israel
▪️ Palestine
▪ Saudi Arabia
▪ Iraq
▪ Turkey (a part of Turkey is in Europe)
▪ Jordan
▪ Syria
▪ Lebanon
▪ Kuwait
▪ Qatar
▪ Oman
▪ United Arab Emirates
▪ Yemen
▪ Bahrain

The Middle East has a lot of oil.
Oil brings money, but it also brings problems. Powerful countries from outside the Middle East want control and influence there because of oil. America has been involved in Iran since the 1940s, sometimes as a friend and sometimes as an enemy.

Inside the Middle East, countries also compete with each other for regional power, politically, economically and religiously. The religion side is often overlooked. For example people often forget that Saudi Arabia and Iran fight for religious dominance in the Middle East. This is because the religion of Islam has two main denominations namely Shia and Sunni. Iran is mostly Shia and Saudi Arabia is mostly Sunni.

But ofcourse, the biggest rivalry in the Middle East is actually between Israel and Iran.

Israel depends on its strong army and support from the United States. It sees Iran as a serious threat. Iran has threatened to destroy Israel. These threats were made as early as 1979 by Iran’s first Supreme Leader, and I will explain that later.

At the center of the Israel–Iran conflict is the belief among hardline leaders in Iran that Israel should not exist as a country. Last year I made a full video explaining how the morden state of Israel was created and why it is at war with Palestine. The video is available on Taffy Theman YouTube channel.

In Palestine, Israel has killed many civilians, bombed homes, hospitals and schools, stopped food and aid from getting in.

Iran supports Palestine. It calls Israel's actions crimes and even genocide, and helps groups that fight Israel by giving them money, weapons and training.

The other cause of this war is Iran's nuclear program.

Israel wants to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons because Iran has threatened to destroy Israel before. But Iran says its nuclear program has nothing to do with nuclear bombs. However Israel doesn't believe this.

It is worth mentioning that nuclear weapons give countries an extra layer of security.

For example, North Korea built nuclear weapons to protect itself from outside threats.

Because North Korea has nuclear weapons, attacking it would be very dangerous. That makes Western countries think twice. It is therefore not unthinkable that Iran wants the same level of protection. But Israel says no. America also says no.

By the way, I have noticed that some people think America ONLY attacks other countries because of oil. That is not always true.

America acts based on its own interests.
Those interests are not always about money or oil.
Sometimes they are political or strategic. For example, Afghanistan does not have large oil reserves. But America still sent its military there.

I am saying this because some people believe that if a country has no oil, then it does not matter to America. That is not true.

Korea does not have major oil resources. Yet during the Korean War, America fought to defend South Korea. This shows that oil is not the only reason America gets involved in other countries. Sometimes the reasons are political, military, or strategic.

In June 2019, Donald Trump even visited North Korea. He became the first sitting U.S. president to step onto North Korean soil when he crossed the DMZ to meet Kim Jong Un.

Clearly, oil is not the only factor in American foreign policy. So the claim that America does not attack North Korea simply because it has no oil is false.

💥Now let us look at U.S-Iran relations👇

After the Second World War, America became more involved in the Middle East to stop the Soviet Union from spreading its influence. Oil had become very important to global power. America strengthened its relationship with Iran because of Iran’s oil.

In 1951, a new Iranian leader named Mohammad Mossadegh came to power. He took control of Iran’s oil and said it should belong to Iran. He nationalized the oil industry. This was during the Cold War era when America and the Soviet Union were competing against each other for power and influence around the world.

In 1953, America sponsored a coup in Iran as a response to the nationalization of oil. This coup led to the rise of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, commonly known as the Shah. This man went on to rule Iran for 26 years.

The Shah was a harsh ruler, but he was friendly to America. The United States ignored his human rights abuses because he supported American interests. During this time, Iran was a close ally of America and also had good relations with Israel.

However, many Iranians hated the Shah. One of his strongest critics was a religious leader named Ruhollah Khomeini, an Ayatollah. Remember an Ayatollah is a very senior Muslim leader in Iran. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini strongly criticized the Shah. He also criticized Western influence, and America’s role in Iran. Because of this, he was forced into exile in the 1960s. Even while in exile, Khomeini sent recorded messages back to Iran, telling people to oppose the Shah.

Public anger grew. In 1979, the Shah was removed from power in a revolution. That is how Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini became Supreme Leader and how Iran became an Islamic Republic.

The new Iranian government was strongly against America because many Iranians believed America had interfered in their democracy in 1953 and had supported a dictator for many years.

Later in 1979, Iranian students took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. American diplomats were held hostage for 444 days.

From that moment, Iran and America became enemies. As Israel became closer to America, Iran’s new leaders saw Israel as a Western creation in the Middle East that was harming Muslims. This belief shaped Iran’s long-term policy toward Israel.

This supreme leader who was recently killed was known as Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He had been in power since 1989, having taken over after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

So why did they kill him?
Well, if you want to destabilize a regime in a time of war, you eliminate its leader. Not every country can survive a sudden leadership crisis in a time of war.

This man caused the deaths of about 10 million people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). At that time, the country was called the Congo Free State. The whole country was the personal property of this man.
His name was Leopold Louis Philippe Marie Victor, better known as King Leopold II. He was the King of Belgium from 1865 to 1909.
Leopold convinced the world that he was a good and honest man. He even joined the campaign to end slavery and spoke about bringing “civilization” to Africa. But this was largely a cover. His real objective was to control the Congo and exploit its resources. To achieve this, he sent agents to the region to sign treaties with local chiefs.
Between 1884 and 1885, major European powers met in Berlin to decide how to divide Africa among themselves. This meeting is known as the Berlin Conference. It was hosted by the German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck. Not a single African was invited to the conference.
Before and during this conference, King Leopold lobbied European leaders to allow him to control the Congo. He promised Britain and France that if they supported him, the Congo would remain neutral and that all countries would be allowed to trade freely there. The major powers were satisfied with these promises. They also saw Leopold as a safe and neutral figure who could help prevent conflict among the European powers. Belgium was a small European country and was not seen as a major colonial rival, which helped Leopold gain support.
That is how the Congo ended up becoming Leopold’s personal property.
Remarkably, Leopold never visited the Congo, yet he personally ruled the Congo Free State, a territory more than 75 times larger than Belgium itself.
At that time, rubber was in high demand in European industries. The Congo had vast rubber resources. Africans were forced to collect rubber under harsh conditions. They were given strict production quotas, and if they failed to meet them, they were punished severely.
A colonial army called the Force Publique was used to enforce these rules and terrorize the population. In a period of about 20 years, millions of Africans died. Estimates by historians often range between 8 and 10 million deaths. Some victims had their hands cut off as punishment, while others died from starvation, torture, disease, and overwork.
When reports about these abuses began to spread, there was international outrage. Activists, missionaries, and journalists exposed what was happening in the Congo. Even the British government and other countries criticized Leopold’s rule.
As a result, in 1908, Leopold was forced to give up control of the Congo. The territory was then taken over by the Belgian state and was renamed the Belgian Congo. It officially became a colony of Belgium.
However, Leopold himself never faced trial or any punishment for what happened in the Congo. He died in 1909. At the time of his death, he was one of the richest men in the world.
The Congo remained a Belgian colony until 1960, when it gained independence. At independence, Patrice Lumumba became Prime Minister and Joseph Kasa-Vubu became President.
