If they value commitment greatly, they wont be overly offended about your desire for access, they might be a little hurt but they WILL get over it and simply ask to look through yours at will, in return.

If they value personal freedom more, then going through their phone could be a deal breaker. In which case, we must ask, 'how strong is the relationship and bond between these two if all it takes is a little "snooping" to end it, or make one partner pull away'?
