Donizetti’s Viva la Mamma will be performed for the first time ever in San Diego this September 18th & 19th at 7pm, and 20th at 3pm!

This opera is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud comedy that takes you behind the scenes of an opera rehearsal gone completely off the rails. Filled with oversized personalities, clashing egos, and theatrical chaos, the story features a diva with a temper, a struggling tenor, and the unforgettable Mamma Agata—who barges in to advocate for her daughter and ends up stealing the spotlight herself.

This production will be performed in Italian with English supertitles, accompanied by piano, and featuring an all star cast!

And we're off!
Last night we officially begin staging rehearsals for Viva la Mamma!
Over the next few weeks, this room will be filled with music, laughter, probably a little chaos—and an extraordinary group of artists bringing Donizetti's backstage comedy to life.

We're taking you behind the scenes with us all the way to opening night.

What is Viva la Mamma!?
The drama is supposed to be onstage…
But in Donizetti's Viva la Mamma!, what's happening behind the scenes is much more entertaining. Imagine an opera company trying to rehearse a new production.
There's a temperamental Prima Donna. Her long-suffering husband. A Maestro desperately trying to keep everyone on track. A director attempting to maintain some semblance of order. Singers arguing over their roles.
And then Mamma shows up.
This September, Opera À la Carte San Diego brings Donizetti's hilarious backstage comedy Viva la Mamma! to The Light Box Theater at Liberty Station.
Featuring a fantastic cast of Southern California artists, Viva la Mamma! pokes fun at the egos, personalities, rivalries and glorious absurdity of putting on an opera.
