“The Sinker” 11x14in acrylic on panel.

Occasionally I like to revisit the deep-sea diver. He is such a playful character to mess with! About a year ago I wrote an illustrated short story called “Things Above” (available on Amazon!) and on one of the pages, the diver was deep in thought, so naturally I covered him with crustaceans and algae to imply the passing of time in a funny way.
After finishing the book, I knew I wanted to revisit that illustration, because there’s a lot of contemplation power in that image. I’ve called this painting “The Sinker” for a few reasons. First off, it is modeled after the sculpture “The Thinker” by August Rodin, and so there’s a definite homage to the masterpiece. But changing the name to “The Sinker” conveys an even deeper idea. The diver is deep in thought, deep underwater and because he spent too much time thinking and not enough time acting upon his thoughts, critters and crustaceans have fused to his immovable form. And now, this diver is in trouble. He was so trapped in his thoughts that he is now trapped in his body.
We all have been there. Sometimes this is caused by analysis paralysis, other times it’s because we spend too long in a land of make-believe. If we spend too long in that place, it will get harder to move. We must be doers, not just thinkers. Otherwise we will become frozen doomed to sink to the bottom of a sea of regret.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and if you have questions about the pieces!

“Bold” 11x14in acrylic on panel.

Here’s the Andean cock-of-the-rock. He fits along with the tropical-themed birds I have been preparing for the show. Talk about a bold bird with a bold name! He’s one of the most memorable birds I have ever laid eyes on. Of course you can find him in… you guessed it… the Parker’s Aviary in the San Diego Zoo. There are a LOT of feathery friends who have a way of catching your attention, and this one can do just that. If you need a bird in your home to be a conversation piece, this tropical bird fits the bill!

“Curiousity” 11x14in acrylic on panel.

This bird is a Blue-headed Macaw. The smallest in the Macaw family. They are located in Central and South America, but they are also located locally in the Parker’s Aviary in the San Diego Zoo! While my wife was snapping pictures, this guy was very curious! He was good at posing because he wanted to know what that strange red-headed lady was doing!

As I said before with the turtle, I love it when these creatures let their personalities come out for the camera… and in turn, the canvas.

One aspect I really love with this painting is its color scheme; the blues and purples play well with the greens and yellows. It has a very “fresh” feel; this can be a verdant bird for a fresh wall to bring some life and vibrancy to someone’s house.

“Playful” 8x10in acrylic on canvas 🐢

Today we have a river turtle! The story behind this fellow is this: we were enjoying ourselves at the San Diego Zoo like we often do, and we came across a semi submerged exhibit with some turtles and a Caiman (that would be a fun one in the future haha) the subject for today’s painting was dancing happily by the glass and was very interested in us and what we were doing. This creature had a playful spirit! I knew I had to paint him, not only to capture the creature in paint, but to capture a moment. I love it when these creatures seem to embrace a curious and playful attitude. I’d love to hear your thoughts and if you have questions about the piece!

“Faithful” - Blue Jay 8x10in acrylic on wood

While this bird is quite common in most of the states, I would argue that they are still in the running for one of the most stunning birds in America! Not only would I say they are stunning, they are a faithful friend for me. I’ve painted a few jays, and this azure gem was the first bird I ever recall painting (even before my bird obsession). In addition to this, the temperament and color of this jay hold character traits such as loyalty, consistency and truthfulness. That’s a good friend to have! Do you connect with blue jays like I do?

“Neotropical” 11x14 inch acrylic painting on panel.

Today we have for you a Blue-and-yellow Macaw!
What a beautiful bird! These Macaws hail from the Neotropical regions of the Americas. Along with their Scarlet counterparts, these primarily South American Parrots are so vivid and refreshing to the eye. I love the bright bluish teal dorsum (back) and bright yellowish orange venter (front).

Do you need a splash of color in your life? These parrots would do! The combination of color and flight speaks of a vivacious and free-spirited individual. Maybe that’s why I want to paint these colorful avian friends, because I need a little more vitality and carefree elements in my life. Sometimes we can get a little too rigid, can’t we?

“Family” 11x14in acrylic

Here’s a happy clown fish family! The parents are swimming close to the protection of the anemone while the young one is venturing farther away from safety. Will he return or is he taking risks to begin his own fish family?
