Sun Poet’s Society members, writers, and poetry lovers: this is a sad, perhaps bittersweet, announcement. After 27 years as South Texas’ longest running weekly open-mic poetry reading, the Sun Poet’s Society, as an arts organization and as an entity, is closing up shop. We will keep having the online poetry readings every Wednesday until our very last poetry reading for the Sun Poet’s Society on March 9th, 2022 on Facebook Live starting at 7pm US central time here: https://www.facebook.com/SunPoetsSocietyOfficialPage.
In truth, I have been considering this for many years, so this is not a decision I make lightly. I am ready to move on to new adventures and continue writing, publishing, and in the very near future teach writing workshops. For the time being, I will keep the official SPS Facebook site up for archival purposes so those who are interested can view our previous online SPS Live Poetry Readings.
As your unassuming host and founder, I have been fortunate in meeting and communing with a MULTITUDE of poets and writers the world over; from England, Germany, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Haiti, poets laureate and more. And to top it all off, we received an official commendation from the Mayor and City of San Antonio back in March of 2020 for our 25th anniversary.
I encourage everyone who has enjoyed our Sun Poet’s Society poetry readings both online and in-person to start their own poetry readings and be as inspired as I have been all these many years. My hope is that my tireless and voluntary efforts at fostering a safe and nurturing space for poets, spoken word artists, and creative souls has helped make the poetry world a somewhat more inclusive and connected place.
I am and always will be your thankful host and founder of the Sun Poet’s Society.
Peace, poetry, and love for all.
- Rod Carlos Rodriguez, poet.
