𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗩𝗘𝗟 𝗧𝗢 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗡 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗔𝗝𝗙: 𝗦𝗘𝗣𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝟮𝟯–𝟮𝟲, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲
For our first visit back to Houston in almost 20 years, we’re arriving at an especially strong moment. We’ll visit the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to celebrate two important exhibitions: the first US solo presentations of Bernhard Schobinger and Dorothea Prühl, both key figures in avant-garde art jewelry. Each exhibition spans nearly 50 years of work.

To complement the exhibitions, we'll attend a day-long symposium featuring leading voices in the field, followed by a reception celebrating these two exhibitions—an opportunity to gather with fellow collectors, artists, and enthusiasts. Our program will also include visits to the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, along with artist studios, museum collections, and other stops that reflect the breadth of the city’s creative life. Every March, Munich becomes a temporary capital of contemporary jewelry. Makers, gallerists, curators, collectors, and critics inhabit the same rooms, the same openings, the same conversations.

We asked four critics, curators, educators, and practicing artists to wander the city, then write on three topics: the ephemera surrounding the jewelry week, art and commerce, and the approaches to display there.

• Before an exhibition opens, something else is already being made. Catalogs are designed, essays commissioned, flyers printed. Morgan Hill is a sculptor and jewelry designer whose work draws on a wide range of aesthetic and conceptual influences, from 90s pop culture, campy cinema, and costume design to her Southern, Christian upbringing and experiences as the only female child in an extended family of farmers in Arkansas. Her longing to break the silence surrounding culturally censured topics drives her to create work on themes of death, abuse, depression, and su***de, as well as their counterparts of rebirth, healing, and empowerment. On the lighter side, her jewelry brand, Bad Habits by Morgan Hill, celebrates the pleasure of excess and indulged desires.

𝗡𝗢𝗪 *𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥* 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗘𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗫
𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: Nicolas Christol, "Instable (Unstable)"

Gallium rests inside a hollow cabochon of frosted rock crystal, its presence revealed when the quartz is wet. Solid below 30 degrees Celsius, it turns liquid with warmth, shifting like a living inclusion. Unlike mercury, gallium is not toxic to humans, yet it aggressively weakens metals such as aluminum. It’s used in electronics and certain defense applications, such as nuclear weapons. Here, it behaves as both material and metaphor, potentially interacting with the surrounding silver. It is also a small wink to Peter Skubic and Peter Bauhuis, who explored the use of this metal.
