Not long ago, Danielle deCongé, AJF’s membership + programs coordinator, took in “Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture.” The exhibition was originally organized by Barbara Paris Gifford, from the Museum of Arts and Design, co-curated with Sebastian Grant. It then traveled to The Walters Art Museum, in Baltimore, MD, where it recently closed on August 9, 2026. Here’s hoping it opens at another institution soon!

𝗡𝗢𝗪 *𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥* 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗔𝗧 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗟𝗬𝗡 𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦
𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: Lin Cheung, "Whole Earrings"

Each of these earrings was entirely carved from a single piece of moissanite, with an 18-karat yellow gold butterfly back to complete the piece. Artist Lin Cheung graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in goldsmithing, silversmithing, metalwork, and jewelry, and she is currently a reader in jewelry and final-year leader on the BA jewelry design course at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

𝗧𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆𝘂𝗿𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺/𝗔𝗝𝗙𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗻

During this program, the inaugural recipient of AJF’s 2025 Solo Exhibition Award will take us inside the development of "Geraldine Fenn: Dispatch from the Colonies," her exhibition at Galerie Noel Guyomarc'h which explored the power dynamics of European colonization in Africa through historical portrait jewelry, trade beads, micromosaic, and an expanded collaboration with Zimbabwean beading collective Marigold.

During AJF Live with Geraldine Fenn, you’ll see highlights from the completed show and hear how the award created opportunities to research, to learn and experiment with new techniques, and to make work on a scale that might otherwise not have been possible. Other special guests will join us!

Artists considering applying for the 2027 Solo Exhibition Award are especially encouraged to join us to hear firsthand what the award can make possible—and begin imagining what they might do with the opportunity.

𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: Mari Ishikawa, "Rebirth Light"

Mari Ishikawa envisions parallel worlds where created objects are perceived in different ways, momentarily interrupting the flow of transience. Born in Kyoto, Japan, the artist lives and works in Munich, Germany. Her choice of materials and techniques reflects the meeting of these two cultures. Since 2020, she has served as a visiting professor at Kobe Design University in Japan. Her work is featured in exhibitions and collections worldwide, and she has received several awards, including the Herbert Hofmann Prize in Munich.

During AJF Live with Geraldine Fenn, the inaugural recipient of AJF’s 2025 Solo Exhibition Award will take us inside the development of "Geraldine Fenn: Dispatch from the Colonies," her exhibition at Galerie Noel Guyomarc'h which explored the power dynamics of European colonization in Africa through historical portrait jewelry, trade beads, micromosaic, and an expanded collaboration with Zimbabwean beading collective Marigold.

In this video, Linda Peshkin, the founder of the Solo Exhibition Award, talks about the genesis of the grant and responds to seeing "Geraldine Fenn: Dispatch from the Colonies."

During the AJF Live program, you’ll see highlights from the completed show and hear how the award created opportunities to research, to learn and experiment with new techniques, and to make work on a scale that might otherwise not have been possible. Other special guests will join us!

Artists considering applying for the 2027 Solo Exhibition Award are especially encouraged to join us to hear firsthand what the award can make possible—and begin imagining what they might do with the opportunity.
