IMPROV WORKSHOP ALERT: It Can Only Be This Scene!

DESCRIPTION: Each scene you perform in improv is unique and will be funny, insightful, and moving in its own way. CAN'T TELL US NOTHING will walk you through some exercises that they've learned over the years that reflect how they approach the world of scene building and how they take their scenes to the next level. - NOTE: No previous improv experience required.

INSTRUCTOR BIOS: Tandiwe Kone is a native Houstonian and has been a fixture in Houston’s improv comedy community for many years. She is also an Improv coach and teacher and has performed in improv festivals across the country. Jonathen Myles is a transplant Houstonian and in Houston’s improv comedy community for many years. After graduating from Station Theater in 2012, he performed for 2 years with the “Supernova Cast,” Station Theater and Houston’s Longest Running Improv Show. You can also catch him in other troupes around town. When he is not performing, Jon enjoys being an improv coach and teacher for other local groups in Houston. Amechi Ngwe is a writer, improviser, and improv coach. He performs improv comedy at venues across Houston — primarily at Station Theater with troupes such as the award winning Can’t Tell Us Nothing. Antoine W.B. is a Houston-born improviser and improv coach and is most commonly found performing at Station Theater, but has been known to perform at ComedySportz and local high schools. Antoine’s troupes have performed in a number of large improv festivals, including Chicago Improv Festival, Trill Festival, LA Diversity in Comedy Festival, and the Del Close Marathons.

WORKSHOP ALERT!

TITLE: Shut Up and Pay Attention: How to Read Into Everything and Do the Best Improv Ever

DESCRIPTION: How are your improv scenes? Are you struggling? Do you think every one of your scenes is trash? Are all of your scenes "improv masterpieces"? -- SPOILER ALERT: They are not -- Are you so focused on what you're going to say or do next that you aren't paying attention to anything or anyone else in the scene? Do new ideas throw you for a loop? Do you struggle to figure out what to say or do in a scene? Do you have two characters that you alternate playing in every improv scene? How's that improv script that you're typing in your head during the scene? How many teaching scenes have you initiated? Transaction scenes? Training scenes? Scenes about the lasagna?

Now, have you ever heard about something that was going on in a scene that YOU WERE IN, and your response was "I didn't see/hear/notice that"?

If any of these questions ring true... Take this workshop.
If none of these questions ring true...Stop lying to yourself, and take this workshop.
If you have no idea what any of these questions meant, and you're not even sure what "improv is"... sign up for a class...then, take this workshop.

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Brian has been improvising since birth (because life doesn't come with a script). He has dined with royalty, and toiled with peasants, yet he has always returned to his first love... improv. As no one knows his true age, it is entirely possible that he was there for the creation of improv itself. It remains one of life's greatest mysteries. You can also see him perform at ComedySportz San Antonio, with MY 4 DADS, as 1/2 of BS & DAVE, or at random HEB's. (Brian has taught, coached, or performed alongside 86.5% of San Antonio's Improv Community).

DNL returns Saturday, March 7th, with the award-winning Austinites ¡ESCÁNDALO! and musical guest ZANE MILLER!

Formed in 2017, ¡ESCÁNDALO! is a multiple award winning comedy group performing improvised telenovelas on stage and in festivals across multiple states. Escándalo blends over-the-top melodrama, grounded intimate moments , and campy commentary to capture the nuance of human connections and experiences. Currently in residence at the Dougherty Arts Center, Escándalo is a sponsored project of the Austin Creative Alliance and part of the Artist Access Program through the City of Austin.

ZANE MILLER is a San Antonio–based musician and songwriter who’s played with two high-school cover bands while also working on original material of his own. Influenced by bands like Los Campesinos! and Neutral Milk Hotel, Zane gravitates toward acoustic, experimental sounds that feel a little raw and a little unexpected. Lyrically, he’s inspired by artists like Bright Eyes, drawn to songs with depth, honesty, and purpose. Zane has a soft spot for music that leans melancholic, genuine, and real.

TITLE: Love, Lust, and Laughter: The Formula for a Sold Out Show

DESCRIPTION: Join us to explore the deeper emotional and intimate layers of performance; and how daring to raise the temperature of your scenes while digging deep will capture your audience’s hearts, stir their imaginations, and leave them wanting more.

Workshop exercises will explore platonic and romantic intimacy, emotional depth, and dramatic tone. If you feel ready to show your vulnerable side and are open to exploring these themes, we welcome you. PLEASE NOTE that certain exercises may include minimal, appropriate physical contact within a PG-13 context. Boundaries will be discussed in advance, and participants may opt out of any exercise. We are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all.

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Your supér Escandaloso workshop hosts (Cindy Brio, C.J. Robles, Luna Ruiz, Joe Ogando) are performers, storytellers, and lovers whose experience spans theatrical performance, film, writing, directing, improv, and communication training and more. Offstage, members of our ensemble bring professional backgrounds in relationship coaching and individual therapy — so when we explore vulnerability, emotional stakes, and intimacy, we do so with both craft and great care.

SELF-DIAGNOSED is a long form improv duo created by Doak Rapp and Nadia DeWolf. Their shows are a wacky array of eclectic characters and narratives, typically following a single story line. Much like two cats yelling in the night, this show has something to say and no reservations about making that everyone else's problem. You can find them in any gutter in America or on Instagram to keep up with all their antics.

BOONE GRAHAM sets his journal entries to music, pumps them full of imaginings and goes heavy on the word play. Blending indie pop hooks with punk rock energy and a dash of psychedelia, he tackles existential questions with the lightness of a Saturday morning cartoon.
