It's a strange characteristic, this ability sone of our elected officials have of meeting life's darkest hours, some of our most crucialy important issues, and our most divisive events by repeating empty phrases and dead cliches as if they were valuable and new.
The reason they do this is because the think their voters are too stupid to care. I don't like the idea of having any politician count on my not knowing how to think, how to remember, and how to read. I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but the hell if I'm not at least as sharp as a politician.
From the moment an English teacher explained to me what a cliché was, I've made a habit of listening for them in the speeches of politicians of every persuasion. Listening HARD is a good habit. Learning to do your own fact checking is also a good way of catching the outright lies some office holder's have built their careers on. Just be sure your sources are genuine and honest. Your vote is the most valuable thing you have. Don't be lied to, laughed at, and chumped like a child. Listen, remember, check the record ... and vote. AB
