New composer spotlight: Ian McDaniel! Please join us in welcoming him to MV Expressions!

Ian McDaniel earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Texas State University, where he studied from 2011 to 2015. Following graduation, he began his teaching career at Gonzales ISD as the Assistant Band Director, serving from 2015 to 2018 before being promoted to Head Band Director, a role he held through 2022. While teaching full time, he pursued graduate studies and earned a Master’s degree in Educational Administration in 2022.

From 2022 to 2024, Ian served as the Head Band Director at Cedar Creek Middle School in Bastrop ISD, where he continued to develop students’ musical growth and leadership while refining his work in visual design for the marching arts. During his time teaching Ian has explored with a lot of smaller chamber ensemble works and is starting to create more full ensemble works.

Ian is currently a small business owner, writing original marching drills and supporting young musicians through master classes and private lessons. Through his business, he is able to combine his passion for music, creativity, and educational experience to design engaging visual programs and original compositions that help ensembles perform with confidence and clarity.

To those who teach and create!

If you’re a music educator who also composes, you know how much care and classroom experience goes into the music you write. You also know how rare it is to find a place to share your works without giving up control.

Over the past year, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to music educators and reflecting on what was missing.

That process led to a complete rebuild of MV Expressions, now focused on giving educators/composers a genuine publishing home that respects their work and their rights.

The new model is intentionally simple:
✅ High Earnings: You keep 80% of your sales.
✅ Total Control: You keep full ownership of your music.
✅ Composer Friendly: Clear, fair, and easy to understand terms.

This platform is built for practical, effective music. It’s a home for works that are born in the classroom and written by the people who teach them.

I’d love for you to join as a participating composer! Visit the link below to learn more and apply:

New composer spotlight: Mike Childress! Please join us in welcoming him to MV Expressions!

Mike Childress received his Bachelor’s of Music Education Degree from Texas State in 2012. He studied with Greg Bolin and Ricky Hall as his introduction to composition alongside his degree and certification to teach K-12 music, with a focus in band. In 2011, he was a finalist in the TX State Composition Contest.

An avid fan of the marching arts, Mike performed at the DCI World Championships on trumpet with the Crossmen and Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps in 2008 & 2010 respectively. Performing high quality designs and arrangements with such high achieving ensembles fueled his interest in composing, arranging, and drill design.

Mike has been a band director for fourteen years, teaching as assistant director at Floresville Middle School for three years, Floresville High School for three years, and currently teaching at Smithson Valley High School the last eight years—five of which he has been Director of Bands. The Smithson Valley Ranger Band has qualified for State Marching Contest three consecutive years under Mike’s direction, and has flourished in Concert performance, Solo & Ensemble, and the Texas All-State audition process. The advancement of his program has brought years where all three concert ensembles performed collegiate level music, providing ample experience to study and embrace many compositional techniques.

Throughout Mike’s teaching experience, many moments came to light requiring urgent alterations to his program’s marching band productions, prompting him to arrange and redesign drill to create a better experience for his students. What began as small changes grew into entire movements, then full shows, and even pieces of Wind Ensemble literature—sometimes commissioned to fund his own programs. Mike’s compositions are energetic and often tell a story. He also enjoys creating electronic parts and accompaniments, and may incorporate visual suggestions to create an immersive musical experience.

Stay tuned for new releases + highlights from Mike!

New composer spotlight: Matthew Valentine!

Matthew Valentine is a multifaceted composer and educator who founded MV Expressions, LLC, and serves as an Arranger and Project Manager for MJM Works. As the Director of Bands at San Marcos High School (2018–2021), Matthew’s leadership secured UIL Sweepstakes honors and advancement to the Area D Marching Contest. His previous role at William B. Travis ECHS also resulted in UIL Sweepstakes achievements for the program.

Matthew’s musical foundation was built at Texas State University and during his service in “The Commandant’s Own” USMC Drum and Bugle Corps (2010–2014). He has studied advanced conducting in Italy and competed as a semi-finalist in the National Trumpet Competition. Beyond the classroom, Matthew has served on the brass and visual staffs for The Crossmen and the Texas State Bobcat Marching Band, while maintaining an active portfolio of original compositions and arrangements.

MV Expressions was built from the composer’s side of the table — a publishing model designed by a composer who believes creators should keep control of their work. That’s why our agreements protect 100% of the composer’s rights and return 80% of profits directly to the composer: a direct response to the “old way” of doing things, where lopsided splits have too often undervalued the people actually writing the music.

New composer spotlight: Dr. Stephanie Reyes! Please join us in welcoming them to MV Expressions!

Dr. Stephanie Reyes (xōreya) is a poet, lyricist, and composer whose work is deeply rooted in her identity as an Indigenous choral director and vocalist. As a lifelong storyteller, she has been honing her craft as a poet since the age of ten—a foundation that now serves as the heartbeat of her narrative-driven compositions. A GRAMMY-nominated music educator, Dr. Reyes brings a multidisciplinary perspective to the page, crafting works that prioritize inclusivity, vocal health, and narrative depth.

As the Director of Choral Studies at California State University, Northridge, her compositions and texts are informed by a “from the podium” perspective, ensuring her music is as engaging for the performer as it is transformative for the listener. Her creative output often mirrors her professional advocacy for access and innovation, aiming to reimagine the concert experience through evocative language and modern tonal development.

Dr. Reyes remains dedicated to the idea that every score is an opportunity for authentic connection and to honor the power of written word.
