underrated horror movies that feel like dark fairy tales. if you’re the kind of horror lover who wants folklore, witches, and enchanted forests instead of jump scares, save this list.

1. november — a strange and beautiful estonian fairy tale where witches, spirits, werewolves, and enchanted creatures wander through a snowy black-and-white dream world
2. the hallow — a family moves into an ancient irish forest where old myths and terrifying creatures still live
3. the company of wolves — a surreal retelling of little red riding hood where fairy tales become dark, dreamy, and dangerous
4. the lure — a musical horror fairy tale about two mermaid sisters who join a nightclub and discover the dangers of the human world

two of these were actual bestsellers in the 70s. one even became a tony curtis movie. the other two never left the small press underground. all four have basically disappeared from the conversation, and if you grew up seeing creepy paperbacks on a relative’s bookshelf, at least one of these covers is going to look familiar.

1. Archive 81 - a man restoring mysterious VHS tapes uncovers a decades-old cult and gets pulled into the recordings themselves. cancelled on a CLIFFHANGER.
2. The Society - every adult in town vanishes and civilization unravels fast. season 2 was greenlit and then cancelled anyway.
3. First Kill - a teenage vampire falls for the monster hunter sent to kill her. star-crossed sapphic chaos, gone too soon.
4. Inside Job - every conspiracy theory is real and one brilliant disaster has to manage it. the funniest show they ever threw away.
