Artists in Action members and Salem-area artists think ‘Outside the Box’ at the Salem Art Fair & Festival
September 11-13, 2026. Hours: Fri & Sat. 10-7; Sun. 10-5.

Art fair-goers have come to expect the one-of-a-kind, quirky creations at the Outside the Box booth, which is a fundraiser for the non-profit Artists in Action, now in its 25th year. Made with materials such as paint, carved wood, assemblage, metal, fiber, glass, tile, ceramics, and more, the boxes may be functional, decorative, or both.

Donated by Artists in Action members and Salem-area artists, these creations celebrate local imagination while supporting AiA initiatives and the broader artist community.

Bid on your favorite box at the booth, or use the “Buy It Now” price to purchase it right away and take it home during the fair. Bidding closes Sunday at 3:00 p.m.; winning bidders will be called then and may return between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. to pay and pick up their box.

We are in the Cultural Community area, Booth CC10/11 along High Street.

Call to Artists: Fiber, Fashion, and Fun Featured in Artists in Action’s November Art Show

Artists in Action will present its Fiber Arts Show and “Upcycled Creations” Fashion Show from November 6–28 at Elsinore Framing and Fine Art Gallery, 444 Ferry St. SE, Salem. The exhibition showcases textile-based artwork alongside the playful, wearable "Upcycled Creations" Fashion Show, where artists transform recycled materials into unique pieces that incorporate as many as four different themes.

• Create an outfit for an interview for the job of your dreams—designed to express ambition, your personality, and style.
• Design an outfit for dinner with Liberace—bold, playful, glamorous, and dazzling.
• Design an outfit for a vacation in Iceland, the “Land of Fire and Ice” —inspired by contrast, landscape, texture and adventure.
• Design an outfit for attending a festival in Africa—celebrating color, movement, pattern, and creative possibility.

Artists are invited to submit work for the Fiber Arts Show, the wearable art Fashion Show, or both for one fee: $30 for Artists in Action members, $40 for non-members, and $20 for students age 25 and under.

Online submissions open August 3 and close Wednesday, October 14.

An opening reception will be held Friday, November 6, from 5–8 p.m., with runway judging beginning at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Paint & Write the Town at Riverview Park Independence

The Saturday, August 1st, the location is at the Riverview Park Independence, 10am to 4pm, rain or shine.

Wide open areas down to the Willamette River. Grass as far as the eye can see. Walking trails and paths.

West of Salem, from Hwy 22 - follow signs to Independence. The park is by the Willamette River across from the River Art Gallery. Follow the AiA signs and the "Check In Here" sign.

Spend summer Saturdays creating outdoors in Salem and the Willamette Valley with fellow artists and writers. All skill levels and mediums are welcome — from en plein air painting to poetry inspired by Oregon’s beauty. The event wraps up with a juried exhibition in October. Come create, explore, and be inspired!

Starting Tuesday, May 19th! Artists in Action's member meeting has now switched to our summer hours. Meetings are now on the third Tuesday night, 5:00 Meet & Greet; 5:30 meeting starts. Same location: Elsinore Framing/Gallery.
