It's almost time for the 49th Annual Art Festival Beth-El! This year's show will be a bit different due to COVID, so here are a few reminders about what to expect....

1. Masks are required, indoors and outdoors, for all attendees at all times. Please help us keep our artists, volunteers, and attendees safe and healthy!
2. The show is free and open to the public on Sunday and Monday from 10am-5pm. Saturday is a private preview and is not open to the public.
3. We made the tough decision to move our Emerging Artists of the 21st Century high school exhibit online this year. Which means you can spend as much time as you'd like marveling at the incredible work of these students. Check it out here: https://www.artfestivalbethel.com/emerging-artists-of-the-21st-century.html

Thank you for your support! We can't wait to share our beautiful show with you this weekend! ❤

Due to the current COVID surge, we made the tough decision to move our Emerging Artists of the 21st Century - Pinellas County High School Exhibit online this year.

With the help of Jonathan Ogle, the PreK-12 Visual Arts Supervisor of Pinellas County Schools and this year’s judge, Amanda Cooper, hundreds of works submitted by teachers and students for consideration were viewed and judged. Below you'll see Amanda's selections for the six Award of Excellence winners who will receive a monetary donation from the Sonya & Irwin Miller Scholarship Fund and a link to our website with the 140+ work selected for our show! Please join us in wishing all of these talented local students a big congratulations and sit back, relax, and enjoy their incredible work on the web!

Here's the final artist introduction (and there are over 100 amazing artists we didn't get to introduce)! Tomorrow we'll begin set up and sneak peaks! Give a very warm welcome to new artist Barbara Handler!

"My work is driven primarily by my interests in color, texture, shapes, and pattern. It is influenced by what I observe in the world around me, and is reflected in both my figurative and abstract paintings and prints. Recently, I have focused on painting birds because of the enormous diversity within the bird kingdom. Once I began to research this topic, I was completely captivated by the wealth of color and patterns of the markings on so many different species. The years spent creating enameled jewelry has carried over to the enjoyment I find in concentrating on the fine details. I additions to my "portraits" of birds, I have also started painting birds in unusual situations, bringing to the work a sense of whimsy and surprise."

How incredible is this work from new artists Sandra & Emmanuel-art / ?!

"We approach the face and the body as a topic to talk about other deeper areas of the human being. We have always believed that it is very important for an artist to have their own and different style. We have studied and worked with the aim of developing a totally original work with a unique style. It has been a path of personal search, technical and conceptual experimentation for more than twelve years.
Although we paint realistically, we don't paint in the traditional way. Our paintings are based on the repetition of small elements that are discovered when observing the work closely and carefully, and that from a distance create the illusion of a human figure."

Give a warm welcome to new artist Tyler Quintin Studio Arts /

"The work that I make focuses on my experience navigating life as a Korean-American, as well as the formulation of my identity through Internet culture. Vessel forms represent the day-to-day experiences of the body, where animals illustrate cognitive experiences.
Growing up, I had a typical American upbringing. Despite this, I experienced consistent reminders of my otherness through Asian jokes, stereotypes, and that all to common question of “what kind of Asian are you?” Taking inspiration from wire frame models in 3D software, I recreate traditional Korean ceramic forms through intricate clay structures. The end results are vessels that act as self-portraits that discuss the disconnect between my physical appearance and my cultural upbringing. The vessels, which are traditional in form, lack the surface area on which to apply traditional decoration. This becomes a metaphor for the contrast between my physical appearance and my lack of Korean language and culture.
As an American, I have a hard time feeling a deep connection to a specific culture because we are a melting pot. In many ways, the Internet provided a replacement for this lost connection. The Internet can be an amazing place to explore identity because your experiences there can be anonymous through avatars. I utilize animals to act as my own avatars to tell personal narratives. Parts of these animals are deconstructed into wire frames to communicate the idea of a rendered, artificial moment. In contrast, I want the emotions of the avatars involved to communicate the authenticity of the experience."

We are loving this work from new local artist Gallery /

"Zhanna Thomas is a contemporary Abstract & Expressionist artist best known for her use of vibrant colors and creative process. Her richly layered art embodies her natural curiosity, while her experimentation with textures and materials provide interesting expressions of her passion. Her vision and technique involve the exploration of pigments and their configurations while utilizing a wide variety of materials in her art. This process elicits a multitude of emotional and intellectual responses, allowing the viewer to interpret each piece in their own individual way.

‘’No matter how long I paint or create art, I will always feel I am a student of Art; the more I know the more I feel I don't know. I like it this way and know my passion and energy for art come from being dissatisfied and bored with creating something I've done before. This is probably why I am always seeking new ways and mediums to express myself.’’ -she says."

Say hello to new artist Slagerman Studio / !

"Wood and Glass are two of the main materials in building and architecture. Each material has shaped and changed how we build and the look of our buildings over time. The way each material is combined is what interests me. The question that I gave to myself was, can I integrate glass and wood with glass as my primary material? I have always been inspired by architecture. In particular, large beams and supporting structures, how they come together and how they are fastened.

Japanese Joinery is a perfect example of how beams and other supporting structures can be built. I explored cutting glass in a way that can be joined to the wood, finding a new way of connecting these two materials. One of the particular things to note in Japanese building is that they do not use nails or anything else to fasten two pieces together, they interlock. I wanted the glass to fit the wood in a similar manner. In essence, I wanted to use traditional techniques and translate them using modern
tools and technology. I found the answer using 3D cad programs and numerical cutting machines in addition to traditional craft techniques to cut the shapes out of both the wood and the glass.

Tools and techniques have always played a part in the changing way artisans were able to build
throughout history, especially during the “Edo” period of Japan. So this process of combining artisanal techniques with very modern tools seems to be a natural progression of the way traditional Joinery might be made and how it might look like today. Simultaneously in doing so, I noticed that the voids in the wood could lend themselves perfectly to the art of glassblowing. These voids could create a similar interlocking technique. By blowing the glass directly into the wood I was able forma a perfect fit. The resulting appearance of these two contrasting materials is one that seems as if they naturally formed together and a deeper connection made. I used the classical shape of the Amphora as well as other shapes to again incorporate a traditional form in a modern way."

"My work is hand built stoneware. I use slabs and extrusions to construct architectural vessels for cut flowers, and geometric sculptures based on the Platonic solids. Layers of oxides, underglazes and glazes complete the pieces."

Loving this sculpture from new artist .art / Dave Lasker - Furniture Design, Sculpture and Photography

"To create is to explore the imagination, to honor tradition, to discover beauty and harmony, and to look beyond the known. I believe the creative process; creates the creator. What inspired an artist during the early stages of development evolves, changes, adapts and matures over time... Just as the seed grows, so does the planter.

Words may attempt to describe the work and thoughts may give rise to reasons, but the artist knows that his or her true creative expression comes from the soul. Either the work speaks to you... or it doesn’t.

As I venture down the creative path of discovery, I often look to nature for guidance. I believe we are 'a part' of our environment not apart from it. As the seasons change, I am reminded of the cycle of our lives. Everything comes full-circle... has its opposite: life and death, sun and moon. We are creation born... lead back to the creator."
