I am so excited. This is my beloved sea turtle that I made last year out of 100% upcycled materials, maybe 99% because I can't remember if I used wire from my own stock or not. It was in an art show and sold the first day, then the people decided it was too big *after* the art show was done. They bought it on the first day of the show so it was marked sold the entire time. They had 30 days to return the piece and within the last 7 Days of that, the gallery accepted the return and gave them store credit. Admittedly, in my 25 year career as an artist, this was the first time in such thing had ever happened to me. It was definitely a learning process.

Business is business but I was crushed. I have shown to sea turtle a few times, the first at the Suntan Arts Center where it won first place. Now it is at the Florida State Fair... and it won first place! I've entered it in an upcycled art show in the WADA district of St Pete but have not heard back, yet

That helps to assuage the injury! :). And look at the display cabinet. I love this so much!

B. Stark Art (Artist Statement)

After 20 years as faculty in higher education, I spent a lifetime studying the shifting dynamics of human culture. I love the pride of the ancient world, the marvels of the Middle Ages, and the wildly shifting ways of modern life. It is my passion for these subjects that inspires me as an artist. This enthusiasm is expressed through wrapped wire metal sculptures which host moments of time, personal energies and emotive states. These works become mediums for dialogue. The wire hosts my energy and mystery. The photography captures zen moments of time.

The award winning Metal Myths series evolved from a sculpture class that I took as an undergraduate. These works are designed as a way to attract a new generation of art lovers. The goal is to present elements of fantasy and imagination manifested through modern media to the audience. Additionally, these pieces represent a form of interconnections: each wire is unique on its own but intertwined with the others so it becomes part of the comprehensive whole.

Metal Myths are made through a process of wrapping and weaving which connects me to the long standing tradition of women’s expression through tapestry. I utilize metal as my thread; for greater depth metals of different textures, consistencies and diameters are used. To add vibrancy, pieces of the sculptures are hand-painted with various hues of alcohol ink. Found objects are used to bring the piece into the present and to upcycle discarded items into a new function.

I design my photography to make familiar objects exotic and beautiful. The camera is used to exaggerate the image’s shape, form, light and texture. To keep the soul of the photograph intact, few digital alterations are utilized. Each photograph is printed in an enlarged format to allow the viewer closer access to the subject. Though the subjects seem readily apparent, the true focus is subtle. It can be the refraction of light on the surface of water, the abstracted shapes produced by a reclining animal, or the play of shadow across a unique surface.
