A Simple Theatre The former professional theatre in residence at Eckerd College. A past non-profit theatre company in the Tampa Bay area. The Final Curtain....
We examined it. We looked at it from all sides. We took it piece by piece. In the end, our business model simply doesn't work with the new Actors Equity rules.

We have so enjoyed performing for you. From selecting the plays, to casting the parts, to building connections with community partners, we can't even begin to express how much fun it has been for us to bring the theatre to you. But we didn't do it alone - so thank you to our tireless board members, our generous donors, and to you, our faithful patrons.

From the beginning, A Simple Theatre was committed to fiscal responsibility. Our careful planning and thoughtful decision-making has left us in a good position, and we have some money in the bank. We are proud to announce that we will be donating the balance of our account to the Eckerd College Theatre program.

The "A Simple Theatre Annual Scholarship" will provide the top senior theatre student with a stipend to assist with travel, accommodation, and registration to the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC), which takes place in October each year. The SETC is the premier theatre conference in the south, offering auditions for graduate schools and professional theatre companies, artistic development training, and professional networking opportunities.

The scholarship will last until funds are depleted - we estimate that to be about 7 years from now. If you are so inclined, donations to this scholarship fund can be made through Eckerd College (visit eckerd.edu/giving and enter "A Simple Theatre Annual Scholarship" in the "Other" box, under "About Your Gift").

One last time, thank you so much for supporting A Simple Theatre. We did a good thing here.

Warmly,

Gavin Hawk, Artistic Director
and
Jacqueline MacNeil, Board Chair

Suspension of 2016-17 Season:

The 2016-2017 season has been suspended following the release of new guidelines for staged readings by Actors’ Equity Association, the stage actors’ union. These new guidelines prohibit AST from using Equity actors in our shows because several of the guidelines are in direct conflict with our business model. Actors’ Equity could potentially sanction members who participate in our shows if we continue with our business model, and we do not wish to put any actor’s affiliation with Actors’ Equity in jeopardy.

The guidelines that conflict with our current business model are the following, presented here verbatim from the Staged Reading Guidelines “29 Hour Reading” document produced by Actor’s Equity Association in May of 2016:
5) Actors may only participate in projects that are not advertised to the public or reviewed by critics.
6) Actors may not participate if admission is charged, if donations are solicited or if the project is offered as a “subscriber bonus.”
8) Actors may participate in Readings for invited audiences only. If Programs are provided, the names of all AEA members in the production are to be designated by an asterisk (*) with the indication that Actors and Stage Managers so designated are members of Equity.

For more information on these new guidelines, you may contact Actors’ Equity Association via their website at www.actorsequity.org.

A Simple Theatre has always prided itself on being allowed the freedom to cast the best actors possible for our plays, regardless of whether that actor was a member of Actors’ Equity Association or not. These new guidelines no longer allow us that freedom and severely compromise our artistic vision, and as a result we can no longer go on as a company in our current iteration.

All current subscriptions and ticket sales will be refunded, and we have asked the City of St. Petersburg to cancel the forthcoming Cultural Arts grant funding they awarded us this year. We have also notified The Gobioff Foundation, who since our founding has been a loyal supporter of A Simple Theatre via their Cultural Grants.

Moving forward, The Board of Trustees and the Artistic Director of A Simple Theatre will be meeting over the coming months to decide the best course of action for the future of the company, and we will keep you informed of those decisions. Thank you for all of your support - past, present, and future.
