🌴🥃 Spirit School Thursday: How Rum Is Made

This week, we’re going beyond the bottle and learning how rum is made.

Rum is a spirit made from sugarcane products — most commonly molasses or fresh sugarcane juice. From there, the process begins:

1. Sugarcane is harvested
The juice or molasses is collected.

2. Fermentation
Yeast is added to convert the sugars into alcohol.

3. Distillation
The fermented liquid is distilled to create rum.

4. Aging
Some rums are aged in barrels, which adds color, depth, and flavor.

5. Bottling
The rum is blended, filtered, and bottled.

And yes — not all rum is the same.

White Rum is usually filtered for a cleaner, lighter, smoother finish.
Dark Rum is often aged longer, giving it a deeper color, richer flavor, and more spice.

From cane to glass, rum is a spirit full of history, craft, and character.

🥃📚 SPIRIT SCHOOL MONDAY: WELCOME TO RUM MONTH! 🌴

We’ve wrapped up our lessons on bourbon, whiskey, and cognac—so now we’re trading the brown spirits for a little island flavor.

This month, we’re studying RUM!

Rum is a spirit made from sugarcane, either from molasses or fresh sugarcane juice. Although many people think of rum as simply sweet or tropical, the rum category is incredibly diverse.

Rum can be:

• Light and crisp
• Rich and dark
• Spiced and aromatic
• Smooth and aged
• Grassy and earthy

From Jamaica and Barbados to Puerto Rico, Cuba, Haiti, and beyond, every region brings its own flavor, history, and style to the bottle.

This month, Spirit School will explore the different types of rum, how rum is made, how aging changes the flavor, and which cocktails allow each style to shine.
