Curious about what "bicycle camping" means on reserveamerica.com? Bicycle camping is reserved for those arriving by bike. Cyclists must check in with the park host on arrival and will be assigned space based on availability. Often this will be an open field space with no fire ring or picnic table. Columbia County offers these space to those passing through our area and in need of one night to rest/shower. If you reserve one of these sites and arrive in a vehicle, you will be turned away or will need to pay to upgrade to a regular campsite if available. As always, call the parks office if you have questions (503-397-2353).

Columbia County and the City of St. Helens have recently received grant funds to prepare plans for recreational trails near Salmonberry Lake, off Pittsburg Rd. just outside of St. Helens. The proposed project includes more than 20 miles of multi-use trails throughout 2,400 acres of city-owned timber property known as the St. Helens tree farm.

The vision is to use about half of the property for motorized trails and the remainder for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. Attend the Stakeholders Forum to give your input on our effort to create a comprehensive plan.

STAKEHOLDERS FORUM - Tuesday, May 14, 6 p.m., Columbia County Courthouse Annex (230 Strand St., St. Helens). Staff will give a short presentation on the project. Maps, descriptions and comment forms will be available.

In addition, a working group will conduct a motorized trail workshop Wednesday May 8th, from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at the Columbia County Courthouse Annex, (230 Strand St Helens).

For questions, contact Casey Garrett 503-438-9066 casey.garrett at columbiacountyor.gov

Comments from groups and individuals are encouraged.

This project is funded in part by Travel Oregon through the Regional Cooperative Tourism Program, Portland Region.

Do you know about our equestrian amenities? Camp Wilkerson offers the only public equestrian camping in Columbia County. We have six sites dedicated to equestrian use- complete with 4-horse corrals and miles of equestrian trails. Horseback riding is also encouraged at Dibblee Beach and along the CZ Trail. There are several more equestrian friendly projects in the works as well. We'll keep you posted as they develop.

The campfire ban for summer 2018 has been lifted. You can enjoy your s'mores again in county parks, but make sure your campfire is in a designated fire ring, is no more than three feet across and that the flames don't reach more than two feet high. Our forests are still sensitive! Help protect them.

Columbia County is looking for people who love parks and outdoor recreation to serve on its Parks Advisory Committee.

You'll serve a four-year term, and will review, advise and make recommendations to parks staff and the Columbia County Board of Commissioners about the county’s parks and marine facilities. We'll need you to help us with policy, improve operations, develop and design parks, think about budget considerations, and conduct some long range planning. We also need you to help promote park activities.

Upcoming projects include updating and streamlining the current Master Plan. Further development of the Crown-Zellerbach Trail, Dibblee Beach, Prescott Beach and Hudson Park is also on the agenda.

Currently, the group meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 4 p.m. If you're interested, come to the March 8 meeting at the Columbia County Road Department, 1054 Oregon St. in St. Helens to see how we operate.

Deadline to apply is March 31.

Complete a Volunteer Application Form, which is on the county's website or get one at the Courthouse, 230 Strand St. in St. Helens.

For more information, email Jan Greenhalgh at [email protected] or call her at 503-397-4322.
