CELEBRATING 88 YEARS! Before Disney and SeaWorld, Marine Studios (Marineland) opened on June 23, 1938 as the world’s first oceanarium — opening a window to the underwater world. The historic debut changed tourism, science and entertainment forever.
Located 18 miles south of St. Augustine on A1A South, Marine Studios was founded by W. Douglas Burden, Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, and Count Ilya Andreyevich Tolstoy. Their original goal was to create an underwater film studio for filming marine life.

TIMELINE
1938: Opened on June 23, 1938 as Marine Studios.
1940s–50s: Transitioned from a pure filming location to a tourist attraction, with the town of Marineland incorporating in 1940.
1961: The name was officially shifted to Marineland (or Marineland of Florida) in marketing and promotion.
2006: Reopened as Marineland’s Dolphin Conservation Center.
2011-Present: Operates in Marineland Dolphin Adventure.
Fall 2025: Marineland property was nearly sold to developers. It was saved and purchased by a group of owners who continue to operate research projects, educational programming, and interactive experiences.
