We are singing in a castle in just under two weeks...

If you live around here, you have probably visited, or at least seen, The Castle Museum of Saginaw County History.

What you probably have not done in this castle is sit and listen to live choral arrangements paired with beautiful stringed instruments.

If you remember our candlelit performance in the castle from 2023, you know this concert cannot be missed (even without the candles this time...).

A lot of people are singing Dolly Parton songs today.

She died yesterday at 80, and this is how we are remembering her. Humming in the kitchen, singing in the car, and sometimes getting the words a little wrong.

She wrote more than three thousand songs. Somewhere along the way they stopped being hers and became everybody's, which is about the best thing that can happen to a song. You do not have to be a singer to sing one. That was always the point with her.

She also mailed more than three hundred and thirty million books to kids who did not have any, a testament to her extreme generosity and the lasting impact of music.

Rest well, Dolly. Thank you for the songs.

You’ve definitely heard this piece of music before. But you may not have ever heard it sung.

Back in 1936, Samuel Barber wrote his Adagio for Strings. It quickly became the piece of music this country reaches for when something really matters. You’ve probably heard it in movies, at funerals, or on the news during heavy historical moments—even if you never knew its actual name.

Then in 1967, over 30 years later, Barber went back to his own melody and added words to it, using the traditional Latin text of the Agnus Dei. It is the exact same hauntingly beautiful, slow climb to the top, but carried entirely by human voices instead of violins. It ends on the phrase dona nobis pacem. Grant us peace.

That is the version the Saginaw Choral Society is singing on September 9th and 11th. We will be in the Grand Hall at the Castle Museum with twenty voices and a live string quartet.

If you only know the orchestral version, trust us—it is worth hearing it like this in a room with that kind of history.

This Saginaw Youth Choir is a non-auditioned youth division of the Saginaw Choral Society and welcomes young singers ages 8-16 in the Saginaw Bay area.

We are proud to bring the youth of Saginaw together through song. Registration is open now!

Does your kid love to sing? Maybe they’re always singing around the house, performing for anyone who will listen, or maybe they’re a little more hesitant but would love to try something new. The Saginaw Youth Choir is a great place for them to jump in!

Throughout the year, our singers will learn exciting music, perform in concerts, make memories, and grow as confident young musicians — all while being surrounded by a community that supports them.

The best moments aren’t even on stage. They’re the friendships that form, the inside jokes that happen at rehearsal, the kids who come out of their shells, and watching a group of students become a real team.

There’s no audition and no need to have any previous choir experience. We just want kids, ages 8-16, who love to sing and want to be part of something fun.
