This week's poet guide is Frida Kahlo.
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was an internationally renowned artist from Coyocán, Mexico.
Frida always claimed to be born in 1910, the year of the outbreak of the Mexican revolution, so that people could directly associate her with modern Mexico.
This detail offers insight into her personality, characterized since her childhood by a deep sense of independence and rebellion against ordinary social and moral habits, moved by passion and sensuality, proud of her "Mexicanidad" and cultural tradition set against the reigning Americanization.
Her life was marked by physical suffering, starting with polio she contracted at the age of five and worsened by a bus accident in 1925. The medicine of her time tortured her body with surgical operations (32 throughout her life), corsets of different kinds and mechanical "stretching" systems.
Much of her work was painted lying in bed. Drawing on personal experiences, her miscarriages, and her numerous operations, Kahlo's works are often characterized by portrayals of pain. Of her 143 paintings, 55 are self-portraits which often incorporate symbolic portrayals of physical and psychological wounds.
She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of Mexico as well as by European influences that include: Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism.
The Diary of Frida Kahlo: An Intimate Self-Portrait is a published version of the artist's personal, illustrated journal from the last decade of her life (1944-1954), revealing her thoughts, poems, dreams, and political views through text and watercolor illustrations. The book offers a raw, intimate look into her turbulent life, her relationship with Diego Rivera, and her physical and emotional pain, featuring her distinctive, colorful script and imagery that often mirrors her famous paintings. It serves as a visual and written record of her reality, blending her inner world with her external life.
