*HER ONLY SONG*
Late lamented Asha Bhonsle sang for 7 decades in a variety of genres and in 20 languages.
It was the mid 1970s when a Malayalam film maker was discussing his film's music with Yesudas. This legend suggested doing something unusual : getting a bollywood composer to do the honours. The composer chosen? Try to guess!
This composer suggested that a particular song was best suited to Ashaji's voice. The problem? Ashaji's unfamiliarity with the Malayalam language. Asha had on occasions expressed her admiration for Malayalam film music due to their melody and classical base .
Jesudas heartily agreed with the suggestion of the composer since the two had delivered many hits in bollywood .
The recording took place at R K studios. Asha took great pains to get her accent right considering that some malayalam sounds had no equivalent in English or Hindi. She persevered and delivered a song, her only Malayalam song, which went on to be a classic. The 1977 song,a shaadi song, from film 'Sujatha' is sung at weddings to this day. Here is the song:

SHE COULD NOT CONCEIVE
The story goes that the wife of a certain Mr Aggarwal could not conceive.
As a last resort she did a vrat for Santoshi ma . She was blessed with a baby. She exhorted her husband to finance a film on her fav deity. Thus was born the blockbuster film 'Jai santoshi maa' released on 30th may 1975.
Made with a small budget of Rs 3 lacs it went on to collect in excess of Rs 5 cr, a record.
All this is well known. But the back story is not so well known and is a sad story.
The producer went bankrupt and as for the lead actress it ended in tragedy.
It is said that even in the upmarket halls in Bandra Mumbai people used to leave their footwear outside the Bandra hall,and carry pooja articles and dance and perform pooja whenever Jai Santoshi maa( played by Anita Guha) appeared on the screen.
Whenever people saw her they would touch her feet .For a lady who was addicted to makeup Anita developed leukoderma and withdrew from the public eye. Her final desire was that she should be cremated in full makeup.This was done.
The title song created a sensation that year 1975 and is a popular bhajan to this day. Sung by Usha Mangeshkar i post here that song sung live by Ushaji:

A TROUBLED FILM THAT BECAME A SUPERHIT
Shanti Bhushan gave his script to Guru Dutt in the late 1950s .Dutt started filming with Kishore Kumar and a top actress.
As was his practice Dutt shot 3 reels and showed them to the censors who rejected them. Dutt handed the script back to Bhushan. The latter approached a struggling Lekh Tandon who accepted it.He got Abrar Alvi to rework the screenplay and dialogues. Tandon approached Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor who rejected the request to act in the film. At this juncture Shammi Kapoor agreed to act but insisted on Nassir Hussein or Shakti Samantha to direct it. A compromise was reached: Tandon would direct 3 reels after which Kapoor would decide if Tandon was acceptable to him.
3 reels later Kapoor was delighted with Tandon's work.
The film starring Shammi Kapoor , Kalpana went on to feature in the top 3 films of 1962. The film 'Professor' may be Kapoor's best as an actor and fetched him a Filmfare nomination. The songs composed by SJ ( They won a Filmfare award for this film)are enjoyed to this day. All the songs were good .i post here my fav song from the film. *AN OPN SONG WITHOUT TABLA,DHOLAK*
O P Nayyar is hailed as 'Rhythm King' but one of his compositions has *no percussion instruments*...
Thereby hangs a story..
The film was 'Ek musafir ek haseena'(1962). Raja Mehdi Ali khan wrote the lyrics .
For the recording of one song the tabla and dholak artists failed to arrive on time. OPN a stickler for punctuality decided to record the song without any rhythm relying only on melody.
That song was the lovely 'Main pyaar ka rahi hoon' by Rafi and Asha.
But the story does not end here.
This song joined the list of OPN songs that were recorded *but not used* in the film.
The story goes that while filming the song it was discovered that in the antaras Rafi sang lines meant for Asha!
The film makers were keen to release the film early and decided to shelve the song. The film did not have this lovely romantic song.

SEETA, RAM, KRISHAN
In an amazing example of coincidence i found myself driving past the Municipal hqrs in Mumbai. From there i went to a bar in Churchgate. While at the bar i recounted to my friends a strange coincidence..
Lyricist Rajinder Krishan left his clerical job at the Shimla municipal corpn and came to Mumbai to make a career as a lyricist in Hindi films.
He and some friends used to meet frequently at a bar in Churchgate!.
Who were those friends? Composer C Ramchandra, actor Bhagwan Dada, producer Santoshi, sound recordist B N Sharma and Rajinderji.
Those days there were rumours about an affair between Lata and CR. They were dubbed Seeta and Ram .
At one of these get togethers it was decided to make a film with Dada, CR and Rajinderji doing the honours.
The lyricist wrote a few songs but was unable to come up with one for a specific situation. The sets and actors were ready but no song. CR invited the lyricist to his home and then locked the door from outside leaving him all alone.
At this point the lyricist perforce wrote a song for the film 'Albela' (1951) that is considered a classic lullaby. The song was given to CR who composed the tune while going in a taxi to the recording studio. Sung by CR and Lata it is loved to this day. The song has a solo Lata version.

WILL THE REAL COMPOSER STAND UP?
We are familiar with the catchy C Ramachandra composition 'gore gore o banke chore'. I post that hit song here:

This was from the 1950 film ' Samadhi'.
The very next year the tune of this song was copied in Tamil film 'Oru iravu' with eminent carnatic vocalist M L Vasanthakumari rendering this song:

I did some research on these two songs. Considering that the Tamil film was released a year after the hindi film it is possible that the tamil version was a 'copy'.
But my line of enquiry was this: what if both these versions were copies of an earlier song?

URSULA VAZ KAUN?
Not many may be aware of one particular song from film 'Deewaar' (1975)
It was an action packed thriller so some of us overlooked the fine music by R.D .Burman . In this post i write about a song from that film that was perhaps a last minute inclusion. Picturised on Bachchan and Parveen Babi the song is not a Hindi but an English language song. Sung in a fine melancholy fashion by the now forgotten Ursula Vaz the song has brilliant music. The English lyrics are by RDB himself.
