McAlpin Paintings and Drawings

McAlpin Paintings and Drawings I've been making fine art paintings, drawings and photographs for over forty years. My paintings are about both painting and about observations of nature.

This is how I make sense of the world, and how I share my love and respect for the beautiful nature and people in it. I love using art to bring some beauty, insight and understanding to the world. I love sharing making pictures that express personal experience in a way that other people can enjoy, so that we can share common ground and uncommon joy. They're based in real experience though are nece

ssarily realistic. Color is for expression, not mere description. I'm not interested in superficial appearances. I'm interested in the underlying essence of nature around us. Most paintings on this page are available to buy. Many are also available as affordable prints that I personally print in very small editions. Also, I do portraits and other commissions. Contact me directly if you're interested in something.

The essential purpose of my art is to engage viewers in ways that are personal and immersive. I want the paintings to connect directly on the level of sensation first, allowing critical and intellectual meaning to emerge subtly. In that sense I identify with Janet Fish and David Hockney's use of gorgeous color and expressive marks to seduce and delight the viewer.

With that understanding, the paintings use three parallel strategies. First, that I love and respect my subjects including the flora, fauna and funga of Virginia that I encounter both casually (e.g. in the garden) and adventurously (e.g in our wildlife refuges). Second, that I paint those subjects with celebratory and expressive color relationships, scale and mark-making, to give the viewer rich visual experiences. Third, that I do so modestly and with a sense of humor. Though that humor is often deadpan (e.g. very little things very big), it comes from core sincerity and authenticity, offering courage and joy to viewers.

Watercolor is a strange medium for me, and it will always be strange.

On the one hand I like loose marks and transparency and things that explore the boundary between deep structure and deep chaos.

On the other hand I worry that certain kinds of painting might be perceived as too "easy" in terms of ex*****on and craftsmanship, or that they won't have enough narrative or visual complexity or maturity to hold the viewers' interest. I keep buying more watercolor supplies to explore those ideas, and need to devote the actual time to their pursuit.

I just got word that this painting was selected for "Flourish," a juried art show of botanical paintings at d'Art Center, a non-profit gallery in Norfolk, Virginia. This was fun to paint one year ago and I'm glad for it to travel a bit.

I just dropped off these six smaller paintings plus two very big ones at First United Methodist Church in Peoria, Illinois. They will hang in the gathering area for the next couple of months. The theme is “Flora, Fauna, Funga,” though I should have brought them more fauna.

All paintings are for sale though delivery would be in a couple of months. My main motivation is to share experiences of joy and gratitude for this beautiful world we live in.
