A steam locomotive still runs through the East Texas piney woods on tracks the state prison system built in 1881.

The Texas State Railroad between Rusk and Palestine is the longest and oldest narrow-gauge excursion railroad in the state. Originally built by convict labor to haul iron ore from the East Texas furnaces, the 25-mile route passes through dense pine and hardwood forests, across 24 bridges, and through terrain so remote that parts of it look exactly the way they did when the first trains ran. The railroad became a state park in 1972 and now operates heritage steam and diesel trains through scenery most Texans never see.
