Cast of Il matrimonio segreto, August 23 at the Altamura Center for the arts in Round Top, NY
Soprano Anne Tormela writes about the role of Carolina in Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto:
"I am enjoying playing sch a down to earth character who always says what she means and means what she says. She is the straight serious character among all the comedic ones. Even though she is the younger sister she acts more mature and ironically her actions and secret marriage ultimately puts everything in order as it should be."

The artists are now in Round Top, NY rehearsing for Il Matrimonio Segreto! pictured here is soprano Anne Tormela.
We announce with great pleasure the appearance of Icelandic tenor Thor Arbjonsson in the role of Paulino in the Altamura Center for the Arts in Round Top, NY in its upcoming production of D. Cimarosa's Il Matrimonio Segreto on Sunday August 23.
http://www.thorarbjornsson.com/index.html
This webpage is for Opera Singer Thor Arbjornsson.
I asked Icelandic tenor Thor Arbjornsson to tell us something about the role of Paolino, who is one of the characters in Cimarosa's Il Matrionio Segreto: Thor is part of this production of Cimarosa's masterpiece, which will be performed on Sunday, August 23 at the Altamura Center for the Arts in Round Top, NY. For more information please see www.altocanto.org:
"Paolino is the secretary of Geronimo and also his son law, without his knowledge. He secretly married Carolina without her fathers permission and is trying to get her older sister Elisetta married to the count, for two reasons. One reason is that they believe it will be less of a blow to Geronimo to find out about them if his older daughter Elisetta is already married. Secondly, Paolino will also receive part of the dowry for arranging the marriage for the count.
Paolino is a young intelligent guy that let's his heart sometime make the decision for him. He doesn't quite understand the complications of his actions until after he's made them. There are two sides of him, the secretary that takes his job very seriously and Paolino that's madly in love and makes rash decision."
I asked baritone/stage director STEFANOS KORONEOS to tell us about "Il Matrimonio Segreto" and what he thinks this work is all about:
"The main theme of Il Matrimonio Segreto are unfulfilled desires and the effect this has on the characters: the tenor wants the soprano; the soprano wants the tenor; the father wants to advance his social status; the baritone wants the soprano who has already married the tenor; the mezzo wants the same tenor too and last but not least, the second soprano wants the baritone (the Count) for the wrong reasons since she is on a mission to become a Countess.
Nothing seems to go their way. Everyone is on the verge of a nervous break down and through out the opera, both the audience experience and characters experiences several breakdowns along the way!
My staging concept was inspired by a scene from a movie by the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar: "Women on the verge of a nervous brake down". There is a scene in which one of the main characters, after trying without success to get her girlfriends to pay attention to her and her tragic (according to her) problems, she decides that the best action to take is to do something very dramatic, like jumping from the balcony. The comedic timing of the scene and the way people relate through drama and false expectations inspired me to build a staging based on the every day drama that we as human beings put up in order to get what what we want. This has become so part of our every day experience that we are actually not always aware of it..."

Baritone/Stage Director of the 2015 production of Cimarosa's Il Matrimonio Segreto at the Altamura Center for the Arts: Stefanos Koroneos
Recognized internationally as a “winning baritone with comedic skills” Stefanos Koroneos has built a reputation as world-class performer. The 2014 season included performances with the Berlin Philharmonic (Captain Michaelis), the Osnabrück Theater (Fra Melitone in La Forza del Destino) . Gotham Chamber Opera (El Gato con Botas) where he "sang as pompous and portentous a monarch as any fairy tale could desire.” [Parterre] ,” perfectly cast” [NY Times] and” his pleasing baritone suited well the role of the ineffectual King” [Opera News]..He also sang Ford in Falstaff with Taconic Opera and Dulcamara with NROpera.
Extensive engagements and re-engagements throughout Italy include Teatro alla Scala (Vespre sollenae de confessor), the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro (Il Viaggio a Reims), the theaters of Lucca (Madame Butterfly), Parma (Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Isabeau), Ravenna (I Vespri Siciliani, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly), Bussetto (Vespri Siciliani, La Forza del Destino, Rigoletto, La Traviata), Piacenza (Rigoletto, Un Ballo in Maschera) and Modena (I Vespri Siciliani).
Further international engagements include the Bolshoi Opera (Traviata), Seoul Opera (Le Nozze di Figaro), Athens Concert Hall (La Traviata), Oslo’s Den Nye Opera (La Bohème), Freiburg (La Bohème, Madame Butterfly, Carmen), and the London Philharmonic.

Matrimonio Segreto in the news!
Buffet lunch and hilarious comedy opera.
Intrigue, love, mayhem and a secret husband
I asked Maestro Santelli to tell us a little a bit about" Il matrimonio segreto". Italian opera luminaries from the past such as Guilietta Simionato sang this opera both at the beginning and end of her career, and like Nozze di Figaro here in the US, it is part of every young singers's repertoire.
In Maestro's Santelli's words:
Il Matrimonio Segreto (The Clandestine Marriage) is Domenico Cimarosa's only work still to be regularly performed, it is considered one of the greatest 18th century comic operas or opera buffa, The Italian premiere of the opera was at La Scala in 1793. In the occasion of its premiere it is known that emperor Leopold II was so inspired by the performance that he ordered an immediate encore of the entire opera. It has beautiful music with memorable melodies and an intricate comic story centered on love relationships that ends well. The Italian libretto in poetry and rimes is a gem and must have surely played a role with it metric rhythms for Cimarosa’ s own rendition to music.
Here is another small taste of the marvelous music from the opera The secret marriage by Domenico Cimarosa:
