🎸 Hendrix never took a lesson. SRV was self-taught. If that's your excuse for skipping the fretboard, we need to talk.

The legends make it look like pure talent. No rules, no homework.

But here's what gets left out: those guys were obsessed. Steve Vai once practiced ONE lick for 12 hours straight. That's how they "just knew" the neck. They out-practiced the whole planet.

For the rest of us, there's a shortcut. You don't need 12-hour days. You just need to know what you're playing.

🎸 Hendrix never took a lesson. Stevie Ray Vaughan was self-taught. If that's your reason for skipping the notes on the fretboard, we need to talk.

I get it. The legends make it look like pure raw talent. No rules, no homework. If they didn't need to learn the notes, why would you?

Here's what that excuse leaves out. Those guys were obsessed on a level most of us will never touch. I once saw Steve Vai talk about practicing a single lick for 12 hours straight until it was perfect. 12 hours. One lick. That's how they "just knew" the neck. They out-practiced everybody on Earth.

For the rest of us mortals, there's a shortcut. You don't need 12-hour days. You just need to actually know what you're playing, and that comes from knowing the fretboard.

What was the record that made you want to pick up a guitar?

Maybe it was a 45 you wore out, an album a buddy's older brother kept playing, or a song on the car radio you couldn't shake.

🎸 If you think you're too old to learn the guitar fretboard, you've got it exactly backwards.

It's the most common thing I hear from players over 50. "I wish I'd learned this when I was young." Like the door already closed.

But here's the truth. When you were young, you didn't have the patience for this. You wanted to play the cool riff, not sit and learn where every note is. You'd have quit in a week.

Now you've got time you didn't have back then. The discipline to show up 10 minutes a day. You know exactly what you want, and you're finally willing to do the work to get it. That combination is rare, and it only comes with years behind you.

Learning the neck was never about age. It's about patience and consistency, and you've got more of both right now than you ever have.

🎸 Ever start a guitar lesson on YouTube and three minutes in, you're more confused than when you hit play?

It happens to everybody who's self-taught. The video starts simple, then the guy takes off. Scale names, note names, "just move it up to the seventh fret." And you're staring at the screen, totally lost.

And you probably blame yourself. Figure you're just not getting it.

Here's the truth: you don't have a talent problem. Those videos are built for someone who already knows where the notes are on the neck. That's the hidden prerequisite nobody tells you about. Without it, the best lesson in the world sounds like a foreign language.

Fix that one foundation, and suddenly all that free content you couldn't follow actually works for you. Same videos. Completely different experience.

🎸 I bought a guitar off a guy on Facebook Marketplace last month, and I can't stop thinking about what he said.

Beautiful guitar. Way nicer than the price. When I asked why he was selling, he held it a second longer and said, "I hope you get more out of this than I ever did."

He had arthritis. Couldn't really play anymore.

Here's the part that stuck with me. He didn't run out of talent. He ran out of time. He had years with that guitar and never got where he wanted to go with it. I'd bet he kept telling himself he'd figure it out eventually.

If you're spinning your wheels right now, that's the part I want you to hear. You don't have to shred. You probably just want to sound halfway decent and actually know what you're playing.

Don't leave it for "eventually."
