I hiked along the river bank to see the effects of some flooding on the upper North Umpqua River and ran across this composition. The grace and power of nature came together here with the huge immovable boulders, the transient ravaged logs, and the forever-rushing fury of cold water from melting snowpack.

A shadow line is always an inspiration to me because of its simplicity and single effect: a side-by-side symphony of warm and cool colors. By focusing on a smaller area of the meadow here the composition became more intimate and reduced to just a statement of light and shadow in nature. As the colors warmed into fall and the morning frost began the contrast created a wide, vivid range of color notes. Painted on several mornings in October. Watercolor. Umpqua national forest.

The Coalida rock formations that tilt up and outward along the coast here create dramatic seascapes, especially in high surf. On the trail between Sunset Bay and Shore acres state park, I ran across this light and shadow composition. For a while, in the morning the spray from crashing waves was in the sun against the cliffs still in shadow revealing a beautiful iridescent cerulean blue. South Oregon coast. Watercolor

The North Umpqua River runs clear and cold from the volcanic high country near Crater lake. This sandy beach with overhanging trees is a composition I look for because it tells a story. Clear moving water absorbs everything around and under it, then reflects it all back in a dance of color and light. With the framing effect of the overhanging alders, it became dimensional and vivid with a feel of summer.
