What does it mean to belong to two Nations?

“Declarations of Sovereignty: The Cherokee Response to Revolution” looks at the choices Cherokee leaders faced during a time of sweeping change — and how the meaning and importance of sovereignty continues today.

Featuring historical interpretation and artwork from the Cherokee National Collection, the exhibit connects Cherokee history in the Revolutionary era with the experiences of Cherokee citizens today.

The Foreman Cabin at Sequoyah’s Cabin Museum in Sallisaw is one of the oldest structures in Oklahoma. It was built by Cherokee Nation citizen Alexander Foreman, who came to the area in 1834 from Tennessee. Settling in present-day western Sequoyah County near the confluence of the Illinois and Arkansas rivers, he built three cabins and operated a ferry.

This cabin witnessed the arrival of Cherokee Removal survivors in 1839 and the Civil War. Preserved by Foreman descendants, the cabin (pictured) was relocated about thirty miles east to the historic Sequoyah’s Cabin grounds before its complete restoration in 2026.
