Amy K Bormet is a pianist, vocalist, and composer. As creator, producer and performer for the Washington Women in Jazz Festival, now in its 13th year, she has collaborated with Fay Victor, Mary Halvorson, Allison Miller, and more than 75 women and non-binary musicians from around the globe.

Jessica Boykin-Settles attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Washington, DC under the tutelage of saxophonist and jazz educator, Davey Y. Yarborough. She earned a BFA in Jazz Performance at New School University in NYC where she studied with musicians and jazz legends such as Reggie Workman, Junior Mance, Arnie Lawrence, Buster Williams, Sheila Jordan and Teri Thornton. Jessica continued her education at Howard University where she earned a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies. While there, she was a member of the premier vocal jazz ensemble Afro Blue, under the direction of Connaitre Miller. She is currently on faculty at Georgetown University.

MAJF 20/20 : A Look at #RealJazz
2020 will be the 11th Annual Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival! In 2010, the first Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival (MAJF) was launched by the Jazz Academy of Music, Inc., a Maryland non-profit organization, whose mission is to advance and preserve jazz music through education and outreach. MAJF is known for “real jazz” which is Jazz orientated, i.e. Swing Jazz, Bebop Jazz, Latin Jazz, or Funk Jazz. The MAJF’s three day event has been a huge success, with attendance of thousands of jazz lovers each year. Attendees are comprised of listeners, educators, students, parents and musicians. Attendees travel to the festival from points all along the Mid-Atlantic seaboard and beyond.
The MAJF showcases local and touring jazz artists of traditional genres. Also, showcased are the gospel and blues genres that are primary influences of jazz music. One of the most important aspects of the festival is the focus on the education of young musicians. Middle and high school, as well as, collegiate level jazz bands perform at the festival. The students also have the opportunity to attend master classes conducted by the touring musicians that are performing at the festival, film screenings covering legacy musicians, play in open “jam sessions” with professional musicians and of course see the pros in live performances. Many of these opportunities are free and open to the public.
The MAJF programming consists of 3 days of jazz music performances by some of the top musicians in the country. Artists like NEA Jazz Masters Ellis Marsalis, Brian Lynch, Roy Haynes, Delfeayo Marsalis and Jimmy Heath; renowned pianist, the late Mulgrew Miller; saxophonist Bobby Watson and trumpeter Terrell Stafford have graced our stage. In addition, the event has an educational component that include master classes, film screenings and interviews in front of a live audience with some of the more popular performing artists.

This weekend in Maryland, the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival!!! I cannot wait to get down there and hear the beautiful vocals of Lori Williams and spirited violin play of Chelsey Green along with her band, Chelsey Green and The Green Project. This week will FLY by!!! Music is medicine and Lord knows I need some this week!!! Can't wait!!!
