Mount Hope World Singers

Mount Hope World Singers We are an inter-generational Community Chorus sharing the joy of music! The Mount Hope World Singers is part of the Southeast Area Coalition (SEAC).

Mount Hope World Singers seeks to build community and to foster intercultural understanding through engaging, high quality, respectful performance of music in original languages from The Mount Hope World Singers (MHWS) of Rochester, New York is a community chorus rooted in the harmony singing of world song traditions. The chorus was formed to celebrate the rich diversity of world cultures and to f

oster community in the midst of that diversity. Our repertoire is quite varied and often includes instrumental accompaniment such as piano, cello, percussion, flute, and violin. In addition, we happily collaborate with other artists including dancers, solo vocalists, and other choral ensembles. We rehearse in the Spring and the Fall (3 months each season) and perform several concerts after each rehearsal period. In the past, performance venues have included public schools, churches, senior living centers, and the Rochester Psychiatric Center. We have also participated in many community events including the William Warfield Scholarship Celebration, AIDS Awareness Day, the Rochester Central Library, and the Rochester People's Climate Coalition March for Global Climate Action. Rehearsals are held at 4 East Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY, at the Community of the Savior on Sundays from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. No auditions are required.

What is a p**a?

The p**a is a four‑stringed, pear‑shaped lute with a history spanning more than two thousand years in China. Known for its expressive range, the p**a can produce delicate, harp‑like tones as well as rapid, percussive bursts of sound.

Its repertoire includes classical, folk and contemporary works, and its playing techniques involve plucking, strumming and intricate fingerwork that create a vivid, storytelling quality.

What is a nyckelharpa?

The Swedish nyckelharpa is a bowed, keyed fiddle with roots dating back more than 600 years. Its resonant, bell‑like tone comes from a combination of melody strings, drone strings, and sympathetic strings that vibrate along with the music.

Players use a bow in one hand and wooden keys in the other, creating a sound that is both ancient and strikingly contemporary. The nyckelharpa is central to Swedish folk tradition and is now heard in innovative collaborations around the world.
