This has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make.

And at the same time… I don’t think I was prepared for what came after.

The messages. The texts. The phone calls.
The people reaching out, not just to check on me, but to remind me what this space has meant to them.

It’s been overwhelming in the best way.

I’ve felt more love in the past day than I know how to respond to individually right now, so if I haven’t gotten back to you yet, please know it hasn’t gone unnoticed. It’s just a lot to hold all at once.

I’m planning to put together a video soon to properly express my appreciation and give more insight, because this deserves more than just a quick reply.

And to those who have stepped forward and offered to help carry this forward while I figure things out… that means more than I can put into words.

It tells me this was never just mine.

It belongs to all of us who showed up, shared, listened, and created something real together.

I do hope to bring this back.

But for now, I just want to say thank you.

There’s no easy way to say this, so I won’t try to dress it up.

Star City Poet’s Society is taking a pause.

Not because the rooms stopped filling. Not because the voices stopped showing up. But because life, outside of the mic, is asking more of me right now than I can split myself between.

I’ve always believed this space deserved my full presence. My full energy. My full heart. And at the moment, I can’t give it that.

So instead of letting something beautiful slowly thin out…. I’m choosing to step back with intention.

To everyone who has stood behind that mic. To everyone who sat in those seats. To everyone who shared a piece of themselves in a room full of strangers
You are the reason this was ever real. This was never just an open mic. It was a place where people unfolded.
Where silence turned into sound. Where strangers became something closer.

This isn’t me closing a door. It’s me stepping away from it for now.

Take care of your voices.
Keep writing.
Keep showing up somewhere, even if it’s just for yourself.

I’ll find my way back to this.

Fault Lines is our second “pop-up” and we are grateful for for hosting us!

This Saturday night is for the tension you can feel but cannot always name. The small fractures that widen over time. The pressure you kept swallowing. The moment the ground finally moved.

Bring poems and stories about breaking points, turning points, and the truth that shows up when something cracks open. This theme can be personal, political, romantic, familial, internal. Whatever is shifting in you, whatever is splitting, whatever is finally refusing to stay silent, there is room for it here.

This open mic is not in a back room. Not tucked behind brick and bar lights. Not hiding.

We are taking poetry to the top of the city. Star City!

We just got approval to host our open mic at the Roanoke Star.

Seven hundred feet above the noise. Words rising into night air. Mic checks echoing off the mountain. Art under a sky that has watched this city grow.

May 9th, 7pm! Mark your calendars. Bring a poem. Bring a friend. Bring the version of yourself that has something to say out loud.

Roanoke, we’re taking the mic to the skyline.

Calling Local Artists – We Want to Work With You
Do you know someone? Tag them!
Are you one? Message us!
Are you an art studio? Share please?!

One of the things we love most about our change in the flyers for our shows is featuring real physical art from local creators. It adds depth to the experience and gives the words on stage something visual to live beside. (Local being a 50 mile radius of our city).

But finding and organizing artwork for each theme has become a real challenge on our end. Tracking down artists, sorting through pieces, and trying to match art to themes takes a lot of time and we know there are talented people out there we probably haven’t even met yet.

Instead of us chasing down art, we’ll share upcoming show themes in advance so you can create or select pieces that fit. If your work matches the theme, you’ll have the chance to display/sell your art at our events.

Our next theme we’re gathering art for is: Charm & Curse.

We want as many submissions as possible for this one: interpretations can be dark, beautiful, strange, emotional, magical, or completely unexpected.

If you’re an artist interested in participating, send us a message and we’ll add you to the artist group.

Let’s build something creative together and make these shows feel alive from wall to stage.
