ABOUT THE PLAY:
Inspired by true events and hopeless imaginings, WET BRAIN is a play about three distant siblings and their father’s possible repeat abductions by extraterrestrials during the height of his end-stage alcoholism.
With recovery unlikely, organs failing, and Dad's death all but imminent, Ricky, Ron and Angelina look for a final closure many, many light years away.
CASTING BREAKDOWN:
Non-Union actors for the following roles.
CASTING NOTE:
WET BRAIN centers on a Mexican American family in Scottsdale, Arizona. We are seeking Latine/Hispanic performers for the family roles. We welcome performers from all Latine/Hispanic backgrounds.
JOE
First-generation Mexican American, he/him/his, 50-60s.
A father, widower, and lifelong mechanic. Joe is an end-stage alcoholic whose physical and mental health are rapidly deteriorating. Funny, difficult, vulnerable, and deeply complicated, Joe is at the center of the family's fractured history.
Seeking an actor with strong comedic instincts, emotional depth, and the ability to move between grounded realism and heightened, surreal theatricality. Physical storytelling is important to the role.
RICKY
He/him/his, early 30s-40s.
Joe's son, who has returned home from New York City. Intelligent, successful, sarcastic, and deeply wounded, Ricky has spent years building a life away from his family while struggling with his own addiction.
RON
He/him/his, late 30-40s.
Joe's son who lives locally and works with his father. Ron is crude, funny, physical, impulsive, and deeply connected to the family home. Beneath his humor and aggression is a man carrying years of grief, addiction, and unresolved trauma.
ANGELINA
She/her/hers, mid-to-late 30s.
Joe's daughter and the sibling who has never left home. A nursing school student, Angelina has spent years caring for her father while trying to create a life of her own.
Sharp, anxious, funny, intelligent, and exhausted, Angelina is often the family's reluctant caretaker and voice of practicality.
MONA
She/her/hers, mid-to-late 50s-60s if she were still alive.
Joe's deceased wife and the mother of Ricky, Ron, and Angelina.
Although Mona is dead before the play begins, she remains a powerful presence throughout the story. She exists at the intersection of memory, grief, trauma, and something beyond the physical world.
The actor playing MONA will also play CRYSTAL, a home-health aide, as well as various recorded voices. These characters should be approached as part of Mona's cross-dimensional presence. The playwright specifies that this actor should be credited publicly only as MONA.
