On the bench today…I’m in the process of suspending the copper quilt in a wooden frame. Lots of wrapping and tying, basting in place! I have lots of loose ends to finish up in the next day or two. Thrilled to have this be the first new piece in my new studio space. Happy belated birthday, Mildred (b March 14, 1910).

So great to have this 88-square cathedral window quilt panel (finally) basted together! I'm working on the frame and suspension plan next, and hope to have some final photos next week. Each square has a four-point wire loop so they can be stitched together, sandwiched between a boarded backing and an enameled center. Each square has been fired a minimum of five times—some as many as eight! I made this as a tribute to the strong women who kept my hands busy and my mind engaged. My maternal grandmother, Annie Mildred Hammond Price, stitched a twin size quilt for my high school graduation, and it is my prized possession and the inspiration for this piece.

As I start bringing the quilt together, I'm gathering squares of subtle color patterns to integrate with sgraffito and Mason stain squares. Looking closely at Mildred's quilt, I am taken by her pattern cropping, her choices of what goes next to what, of the subtlety of color in love worn scraps.

Adding stitches to my quilt squares using a leather stitching punch. After the square is stitched into the circle, the flaps are folded 90° over a wooden block. Some of them will get another round of stitching on the back, then fired with clear enamel and folded over another enamel square with a wire loop so the finished squared can be stitch-riveted together.

A sign for these times.

Designing the next quilt section...how many squares to include? I'm adding a stitch-punch detail to the backs not-yet fired with clear enamel over borax. As I start to wind down my winter residency, I'm trying to take advantage of the great studio space, the always-available opinions from fellow residents in metal, ceramics and wood, the staff interactions, and the delicious food just steps away from the studio. This has been (and continues!) a magical time in a wonderful place.

Here's my next nine square section, riveted at the wire corners. It has some motion, if not fluid articulation! I'm happy that it can stand alone, and as with all quilts, the back is as interesting as the front. My heart has been heavy from all of the news from the current authoritarian actions against fellow citizens across this country. I stand with the people of Minnesota who are risking their lives for their neighbors and showing us all the importance of standing up to injustice.

Okay, this version is closest to the original cathedral window quilt inspiration. It's still in progress; I need to tweak the size of the rivets (smaller shaft, half as long) and slightly larger wire loops to allow a bit of motion. Getting closer!

I stitched up another quilt section this morning. This has a combination of sifted, stenciled, mason stain, graphite and sgrafitto enamel. Nice to get some motion after taking the mesh off the frame!

Today's focus was working with Mason stains for my quilt squares. In each of my tests, I'm tweaking shapes and sizes, how the pieces stitch together so they can articulate like fabric, and what techniques make interesting pieces by color, texture, and the potential for fun!
I picked a few of my favorite quilt section as inspiration, four formed and base coated squares, and a sketch. I then drew directly on the etched white surface with graphite, lightly fired to set the design, then added mason stains mixed with powdered glass. A couple of firings got me to where I am for now--one piece went south in the process and will need to be remade. I'll tweak how far the holes are from the corners to reduce burnout at the edges, and will look at these again with fresh eyes tomorrow morning.

Testing, testing! Checking size, stitching, what needle will pass thru easily, stitch color ( #20 h**p cord), concave/convex doming, copper mesh. Trying to get details sorted before I get into enameling the quilt squares.
