Feral Blue

Feral Blue Feral Blue offers limited production and one-of-a-kind sterling silver jewelry and metal accessories. It's truly a one-woman show around here.

It is hand fabricated by Richmond native and semi-nomadic artist Ash Tamber. Feral Blue incorporates semi-precious stones such as turquoise, labradorite, and moonstone into mostly fabricated, though sometimes cast, sterling silver jewelry and other metal accessories. Striving to make my work illustrative, I use techniques like engraving or layering metal to bring character to my pieces. Feral Blue also consists of metal accessories like lighter cases, jewelry dishes, incense holders, and joint tubes. I enjoy the prospect of bringing functional small metal objects into the hands of non-jewelry wearers as much as I enjoy making jewelry for adornment. I aim to recycle metal in-house as often as possible and outsource very little of the creative process from design to marketing. My space for custom work is limited but if you have an idea that would do well to be expressed in my style of work, send me an email at [email protected] and let's discuss.

My best friend met her husband, Miles, haphazardly on the beach in Miami. In those days the two of us had taken to calling ourselves feral alley cats. It would take a special type of man to be by her side, but Miles more than filled those shoes. (Here he is with feral cat amethyst ring I made him a while back). He was a wild boy. He showed us the parts of Florida that make it truly beautiful. But he also took great care of the family they built. He was a pillar, not just for her and their kids but to so so many folks out there. We lost him in a diving accident last week. It still feels unreal. The rising GoFundMe is a testament to how he showed up in the world. How he loved and was loved. We’re hoping to grow it some more so we can take care of his family in his absence. Hundreds of us will still never fill his shoes, but if you’re able to contribute every little bit helps.

When I was making my weird nebulous enameled shapes years ago I was trying to bring concepts into my work. I was used to everything requiring some explanation of inspiration. For those it was tattered textiles. Honestly I was never a big jewelry wearer and have seldom been attracted to the pristine. I found it interesting to try and take the idea of capturing a moment in the deterioration process in metal. Though my pieces would turn heads, I needed something more marketable in order to live. So my work evolved.
Lately life has been a little.. different. With any artist of any type, your inner life will always bubble outward into your work in some kind of way. That’s where this series came from. Every time I reach for something that seems to sparkle and shine, upon further examination it’s simply just as worn as anything else. Apparently I live for the story. The irony of the fact that the medium of metal requires that every “imperfection” is relatively planned isn’t lost here. I’ve always wanted the things I make to make you curious.

Despite the quiet here, things are happening. “Things happening” looks a little different than it did this time last year. My studio is now basically working around classes in the facility where I teach. Speaking of teaching, I’m doing a bit more of that lately. As much to others as myself. I might share more tips and tricks here if y’all are into it. Who wants to make a billion bezels?? As always, hit the 📧 list for the direct line and the good s**t.
