Holbein paints are fun to play but I don't use them often because many colors contain multiple pigments which can make muddy mixes. This one turned out well though! It reminds me of a cool, clear lake.

If you prefer working with convenience colors, especially if you paint botanicals, Holbein is worth a try. The paints are creamy and a dream to use. I would use them a lot more if I didn't focus on color-mixing concoctions so much.

Dirty Blue's Ultramarine Pink (PR259) and Victoria Green (PG51) are quintessential spring hues. These shades exude life and liveliness and are perfect for the new growth of spring. These two pigments earn a prime spot in my botanicals' palette.

Hello friends! I made cotton candy for you! 😊

To get over a creative block, I decided to play with my two favorite pigments of all time: Manganese Blue (PB33) and Ultramarine Pink (PR259). These exquisite versions came from . They are highly‐pigmented, extra-vibrant, and super-clean — three of the most important characteristics to look for when selecting watercolor paint. Dirty Blue has become my go-to for handmade paints because of their commitment to quality and deep knowledge of pigments & the science of paint.

Cotton candy was the first thing that popped in my mind after mixing this up, but it would also work well for an early twilight sky or botanicals. These two single pigment paints offer endless mixing possibilities!

Victoria Green (PG51): yet another exceptional paint from . If you haven't tried any of their products, I recommend picking some up. They are works of art in and of themselves.

This rare pigment is reminiscent of natural malachite, however it is more saturated and consistent. Natural malachite can become dull over time but this pigment will retain its vibrance.

A soft single-pigment pastel green is uncommon. A hue like this typically mixes a phthalo green with white which increases the opacity. This shade of green is unique in that it is transparent. If you paint botanicals or enjoy working with pastel colors, this deserves a spot in your palette.

Color wheels don't need to be limited to primary colors — use some of your favorites to see what magic you can create! For this wheel, I used three of my favorite pigments:

🔴 Old Holland: Ultramarine Red (PR259)
🔵 Dirty Blue: YInMn Blue (PB86)
🟢 M. Graham: Viridian (PG18)

These mixes produce some moody shadowy colors as well as vibrant purples.

Dirty Blue's YInTiCo Red (PR298) and Manganese Blue (PB33) mixed on super-texturized paper to showcase the granulation of each. The paints are heavily pigmented so I needed just a little bit of paint to achieve this result.

Dirty Blue's YInTiCo Red (PR298): this is one of the rarest paints out there right now. The only other company that offers it is Schmincke.

Dirty Blue's version is what I hoped Schmincke's would be. It's highly pigmented, clear, and heavily granulating. Schmincke's paint was underwhelming to me — it is somewhat chalky, difficult to reactivate, and requires a lot of paint to get adequate coverage.

Dirty Blue's version is high quality and easy to use. It's excellent for mixing, especially if you like working with granulating paints. There's nothing quite like it, so it would be a useful addition to your palette.

Dirty Blue's Manganese Blue (PB33) is absolute perfection. This exceptional granulating cyan has become the jewel of my collection. It is intensely pigmented, vibrant, and clear. Just a little bit of paint will produce the results shown in my swatch.

Since PB33 has been discontinued by pigment manufacturers, the paint is difficult to find. No mainstream companies offer a single-pigment version however you can find it from a few handmade paintmakers. Many companies offer approximations (labeled "hues") but none of them compare to the real thing.

If you collect uncommon pigments or are obsessed with cyan as much as I am, I highly recommend buying a pan of this. It is an excellent choice for a CMY palette.

When I go through a creative dry spell, I find inspiration in random color mixes. I pick colors that speak to me and throw them down on paper. I used a bunch of different brands like Dirty Blue, M. Graham, Schmincke, Roman Szmal, and Winsor & Newton for these little squares.

Ultramarine Pink (PR259) by Old Holland – one of my favorite hues. This slightly uncommon pigment is excellent for botanicals and bright landscapes. It's also fun for mixing because it's the only single pigment granulating paints that is this shade of pink.
