What started as an interest in traditional Chinese brush painting (watercolor and ink on rice paper) I have always had an interest in art and all things oriental.
I began studying Chinese Brush painting in 1989, when I took my first class at the Smithsonian. What started as an interest in watercolor and ink painting became an all consuming passion - a life-time vocation. In 1989 I began studying with Painting Master I-Hsiung Ju (1923-2012). As part of my study of both Chinese culture and painting, I traveled with him to China in 1993, 2001, 2004 and again i

Rice paper on cradle board – mixed media. The initial painting was completed on rice paper using traditional brush painting techniques with Chinese ink and watercolor. It was then mounted on cradle board and acrylics were used to enhance the painting.
Crane and pine are often painted together are a symbol of longevity in Asian culture.
The process behind this painting is as follows – the sheet of rice paper was used to blot washes on other paintings. It was then crinkled and a dry brush dipped in black ink was dragged over some of the crinkled areas. The painting was then lightly misted to relax the crinkles in the rice paper. Based on the black ink marks, the plum painting emerged. The painting was then mounted on a gessoed cradle board with acrylic medium. Acrylics, alcohol inks and pastels were used to further develop the painting.

My training is in Chinese Brush painting. I use ink and brush on rice paper, to capture movement and life - making the brush dance and the ink sing. Everything is captured in the spontaneous dance and movement of the brush as it meets the rice paper.
This love of spontaneous Chinese painting has provided a unique segue for my exploration of more abstract techniques of Oriental painting such as 'Splashing Ink' or 'PoMo.'
Upon retiring in 2016, the door opened so to speak, providing me with an opportunity to explore a range of mixed medium including encaustic wax, alcohol inks, acrylics, India inks and pastels on substrates ranging from water color paper to yupo, mineral paper, metal surfaces, canvas and ceramic tiles. This exploration has led to a creation of very abstract paintings, expressive landscapes, to more controlled flower and nature paintings.
I currently teach traditional oriental brush painting and 'splashing ink' painting at the Art League School (part of the Torpedo Factory) in Alexandria, Virginia. I am a member (treasurer) of the League of Reston Artists and a member of the Sumi-e Society.
Work includes traditional Chinese brush paintings, splashing ink, abstracts and expressive landscapes.
Mediums used include water color, chinese ink, acrylics, alcohol inks, encaustic wax, pastels and pen on a range of substrates including rice paper, shikishi boards, yupo, terraskin and other synthetic papers, canvas, cradle board, mdf board, metal, glass and ceramic tiles.
