In E.T.A. Hoffman's original 1816 story, the little girl who goes on an adventure with her Nutcracker is named Marie, and her doll is called Clara. There have been many adaptations of the story since then, and the character is sometime Marie and sometimes Clara. In Russia, she is often called Masha, a variation of Marie.

Girls must come in their white uniform leotard with their hair neatly pulled into a bun as they would for a performance. Boys should wear a white shirt and black tights.
