A mural commemorating the first official Little League team to be formed in Wisconsin was installed in Nishan Park in mid October, 2021. The Hankscraft team with Jim Conlin as coach, is depicted on the mural.

How The First Little League team in Wisconsin started in Reedsburg.

One afternoon in the fall of 1950, Jack Downing brought up the subject of boy’s baseball while having coffee in Sueltman’s Cafe (116 South Walnut) with Ted Merkel. Merkel owned the Coast to Coast store and Downing was the sports editor of the Times Press. Ed Quinlan happened along (manager of the Big Store) and he joined the conversation.

At a meeting the next spring, the Kiwanis Club, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Hankscraft each put up $200 to form the first 4 teams. Other donations were used to build the first ball diamond in Webb Park. A backstop was erected, bleachers were installed and 80 boys who turned in their application blanks, were assigned to a team. The first games were played on May 29, 1951 with the V.F.W. beating Hankscraft and the Legion defeated Kiwanis.

The next time you’re downtown you should notice some activity at the “Hops Boom or Bust” mural on the wall at the Corner Pub. The mural, installed in 2003, is “literally” getting a facelift. Artists have begun refreshing the mural originally placed by the Wormfarm Institute. And while you’re there catch lunch at the Corner Pub.
