Such a wild ride to where we are now. Gage Rivas and myself -Alexandria Cannon started Lark and Walrus with our first performance being on the historical Cascade Theatre stage as a duet.
We played around for about a year and then brought our friend Chris Jones onboard with his djembe. He went on to form his band “She was the Bear” and still comes to all our shows (love you man.)
We started to play in Chico a lot .. there we found Brent Warr at Maker Radio who became our trusty bass and lap steel guitarist.
From there we reached out to a close friend and amazing drummer CJ May who was stoked to see how we might all work together.
It was she, who recommended we ask Ken Simmons to play with us and that’s how we got our mandolinist/bassist/lead guitarist.
Lark and Walrus became a new sound. Each musician creating their own sound. It’s only been since late September 2025, that we have even been all practicing together (wild af.)
Gage has always been an amazing singer/songwriter and rhythm guitarist (not to mention harmonica-ist) and when we met he encouraged me to share my poetry with him.
When I did, we put it to an acoustic sound… his beautiful strumming and our vocals together suddenly clicked.
We began writing together.
He would write a song, I’d learn it, we’d sing it. I’d write a song, he’d learn it, we’d sing it together. We would write a song half and half. I’d come to him and hum a pattern and he’d somehow know what sound I was after. All of our songs are original. All formed from love and creativity.
He writes the bulk of our music and together we weave stories of tragedy, survival, adventure, loss, love, comedy and haunting observations of the human condition. The music crosses all boundaries of genres and appeals to all ages and tastes. It’s truly so much fun creating it.
Eventually I picked up a speech therapy device that I call my “khorn” it is a kazoo horn for vocal cord workouts and I fell in love with the sound.
I brought it to the band and rest is history.
We sound like if Pulp Fiction and Co**se Bride met in the 90s and had a baby. 😂😂😂
When we booked our favorite venue The Dip in January , after only 3.5 months of playing together, our bassist was run over on his bicycle and had to stop using his arm for awhile. We had a badass show coming up with Crunk Witch and luckily for us Dairrien Call stepped in the save the day. In just around 5-6 practices, he learned our songs and threw down with us on stage.
We are lucky to do what we love. Make art with friends and share it with the world.
This year will find us playing events, recording and growing into the beast we know we are.
Only getting started.
Additionally, Gage and I are both artists.. we make all of our merch ourselves. I like to brag. 😍
Please continue to follow us and share what we love. Your support makes all of this possible.
To our group/homies we love you forever.
