I've kinda been poking at models with sticks lately. Motivated to be at the bench but don't know what I want to work on. Hopefully I'll break through that block and start moving on a few projects. In the mean time Rod K***z donated an older Harder @ Harder & Steenbeck Airbrush Evolution to my growing collection. He's never been able to get it to work for him and I said I'd take a look.

So I got it a few weeks back after some coordination with Jake Ford to get it from him at RME. Disclaimer, I'm not an airbrush expert, but I'm pretty handy and enjoy repairing things. So what I got was the airbrush in it's original box, along with the larger and smaller cups for this brush, and a bag of miscellaneous seals. The brush was a bit dirty, like some one had gotten frustrated, did a quick flush and put it away, which tracks with what Rod had told me about the brush. I wanted to a quick test to see how it sprayed as it was so I loaded it up with some AK acrylic inks, set my pressure to around 20 psi and gave her a spray test. Something was definitely wrong, spray pattern was very course, had a distinct rectangular shape to it rather than the normal round shape and fine control was pretty much nonexistent. Also had bubble back into the cup. I also notice during my test that the top of the trigger wanted to rotate freely...that definitely should not be a thing on any airbrush. The trigger feel was also pretty stiff and draggy, which I chalked up mostly to being dirty.

Onto the figuring out what was going on. Started by flushing out the color I'd just sprayed through the brush, and noticed I got some small bits of stiff coming out with the cleaner, so I need to go beyond just a spray out cleaning. Out with the air cap, nozzle and needle and at this point I got the nozzle under my magnifiers and found the source of the weird shaped spray pattern and bubble back, the nozzle was split. That bit goes into the bin, the air cap follows and the needle goes into a tool drawer. Speaking of the needle there was a lot of drag pulling that out of the body, so I need investigate that a bit further, initial thought was that it was dirty and had some built up paint in it. I've already decided it's getting the whole new assembly from the 2024 Evo.

Next I tackle the body, I poke a small soft brush soaked with Tamiya airbrush cleaner through the front end and gently scrub. If you try this be very careful you don't run the metal shaft of the brush against the inside of the body, you could possibly scratch the finishes and create a spot where pigment will collect as the paint flows past. Scrubbed until clean, and then took a smaller diameter brush and got into the pack seal. That came out clean, so my thought that there was some built up paint in there falls short...now I'm taking apart the back half of the air brush, and either adjusting the pack seal or replacing it out right. Well I decided to replace it out right, simply because teflon seals do not spring back to their original shape and I fresh ones so what the heck, lets go. At this point the trigger also went into the bin, not sure what happened with the top of it, but it was loose and it was the older teeny tiny one, and they kinda suck. That was also replaced with an item from a 2024 Evo.

You all can guess the next step, everything goes back in the reverse order. The only thing that got extra attention was the pack seal with needs adjusted very slowly when you put it back in. My method involves turning the seal head in just until it stops, testing the friction of a lubricated needle as it passes through and making the tiniest adjustments possible until there is just a bit of friction. There you have adequate sealing and better trigger feel overall. Speaking of trigger feel, I like my triggers on the lighter side, and the Evo spring has a noticeable amount of preload and feels rather stiff. I could order a new spring for the 2024 Evo but I have a simpler solution, I trimmed out about a coil and a half of the existing spring. So I get a lighter spring feel without having to order a part. Everything else goes together like an airbrush should.

Final spray test was just what I would expect. Nice tight spray pattern, especially for an unadjusted medium, and the fine control was back. Sometime a little tlc goes a long way, and a little work can make something that's not working a real gem. Now my wife, who has decided that Maschinen Krieger is really cool, has an airbrush she can call her own and learn with. So big thanks to Rod for the brush! And stay tuned for Carries adventures at the bench!

Happy modeling!

Well Andy's Hobby Headquarters got these to me super fast. Got them a couple days ago and have had time to pick through the boxes a bit. From what I see these are going to be amazing. The tracks are kind of nuts but not unbuildable. But Doogs Models set will be a massive time saver!

I look forward to diving into these in very near future. And yes, I'm going to build at least one set of the tracks!

Alright, so I've been quiet since I got back from AMPS. Admittedly, the first week after the show I couldn't settle on what I wanted to work on. I knew my buddy build with Mark R. Bradley had to be set a side for a bit. I was starting to rush too much and didn't want to risk totally messing up the solid work I've got going. So I waffled...then I waffled some more...broke bags on a kit glued a few parts together and put it back in the stash...did that one more time. Pulled out a KV-1, got some great reference material from Maschinen Krueger, massive thanks for that! Stay tuned for that project, I have an idea!

I finally got back into the M10 Booker from Magic Factory. I don't think I've shared this build on this page yet, and I'm too lazy to go back and look to find out. I left off with the hull about 3/4 of the way done when I put it up to work on the Stryker. Picking up there I hammered out the rest of the hull, taking my sweet time making sure the assembly is as clean as I can possibly get it. Making sure I put some time into the tracks at some point during every session, I'll have a separate post about those in the near future, they're tedious but very well done. The only minor issue I had was a gap that was left by the side skirts during the dry fit, pretty easily fixed with a bit of filing and repeated test fits. They will be fit permanently after paint and weathering. Then onto the turret...which as you can see in the pictures is pretty nearly done.

As usual I will leave some thoughts in the captions and I'm always open to input and your own thoughts on the project!

Happy modeling all!

I had the opportunity to attend the 2026 AMPS National Convention in South Bend Indiana this weekend. The show was quite the experience. A lot of amazing work on the table and a good sized vendor area. It also happens to be my first AMPS show, I came away really impressed at the level of work on the tables and how well the show was run overall. I'm not going to post any pics of my models with their awards, but I came home with one silver and three golds, quite happy with that for my first AMPS show!

But the highlight of the weekend, as always, was the people. Mark R. Bradley, Rod K***z and myself met in Des Moines and caravanned to South Bend together. We met up with the The Plastic Posse crew and had a blast! Got to put some new faces with names, and chat about their work.

Like my other show posts, I'll share pics of the models that made me stop and take a closer look. I'll do my best to tag the modeler in the photo if I know who it was! There were a few that I thought I took pictures of but apparently didn't..., Sprue, and BBQ I apparently missed your Bradley, it should have definitely landed in this list.

Enjoy, and happy modeling!

In a rare change up for our Easter Weekend my wife and I went to Colorado for the weekend. Had a great weekend off together, hit up Ikea and a few other places for Carrie. Saturday was spent at CoMMiESFest model show, great show guys, looking forward to attending again next year. Took a bunch of pics of the models I really liked and even brought home some hardware of my own! I will admit there were probably four pieces that I saw get completely ignored that should have been awarded and the pieces that were awarded had some obvious flaws, but it is what it is !

Huge shout out to Glue, Sprue, and BBQ for opening up your spare bedroom to us and being an awesome host!

Enjoy the photos and I'll post up some more thoughts and my own winnings in a bit.

Realized I missed my normal Monday post. Turns out it was a pretty nutty week. You known what they say about best laid plans...yup. Spent a lot more time at work this week than I had planned on and got the call from the local bike shop that they were buried and needed another wrench. So progress was made but not as much as I had hoped.

This week will see me busy at work and at the shop, as well as getting things ready to go for CoMMiESFest this weekend. Hope so see some of you there.

Here is my update for the 1/35 Ryefield Models Stryker buddy build with Glue, Sprue, and BBQ . Weathering has commenced! Catch the captions for a little more detail.

WIP! Week 9 of the RFM M1128 Stryker build with Glue, Sprue, and BBQ. I managed to wrap up all the major and detail paint work today this week, and I'm ready for a couple days of breather as I let things rest for a day or two.

The week started with the NATO green going down and some modulation tones along the way. Mid tone is straight AK Interactive 3rd Gen NATO green. Shadow tone is NATO green and black in a ratio of 10 to 1. First highlight is NATO green and Sunny Skin Tone again in a ratio of 10 to 1. With the final highlight being the same mixture in a 5 to 1 ratio. That last highlight went on the very top surfaces of the turret only and sparingly, focusing mostly on the top of the barrel.

Parts of the lower hull, particularly towards the front received some very light hairspray chipping. This was different from my normal process because I'm normally chipping back to a red primer or rust tone. In this case the armor plate is aluminum, so naturally there is no rust. I actually laid down a layer of AK aluminum, followed by a quick shot of hairspray and then my main color. Chipping was controlled and again kept very light. My references showed some chipping to the edges of the plates, but not a lot and nothing really extreme.

Details were all hand painted with AK 3rd Gen acrylics on a wet palette and my trusty Winsor and Newton #1 Series 7. Metallic colors were handled with Vallejo Premium Synthetic detail brushes, if you haven't seen these and are looking for a really good synthetic brush that holds it's shape these are hard to beat!

Decals all went down very well. I'm a heathen, I decal over a matte finish, and in this case I did spray some matte varnish down over the areas receiving decals to prevent the previous hairspray layers from reactivating. I did miss a couple spots so ended up with some unintentional chipping, that actually looks pretty good and will be staying. A little silvering on some of the smaller ones but I can correct that as I go. They were super thin and responded will the Micro Set and Sol. I got out the Solvaset the next day because on or two of the larger decals had air bubbles. The Solvaset fixed those straight away. Decals were sealed in with AK Matte Varnish.

I also discovered something very cool, and I feel like I missed the boat on this one a while ago. There are little sensors along the sides, front and back that relate to the MILES system modeled on this vehicle. Those sensors have a tiny, shiny screen on them, there are also a couple of cameras on the Stryker. One could recreate that with a drop of gloss varnish in each of them, but I didn't want to wait for it set so I could move on to the next one. Then I remembered I had traded Jake Ford some contraband Mr. Surfacer for some UV resin, something I had never used before. Apparently I've been living under a rock. That stuff made that process a lot faster and the result is worlds better than using gloss varnish!

Overall I'm well pleased with what I have. I'll revisit in a day or two after the stoke of finishing the paint work has subsided a bit and I can be a bit more critical. I'm open to critique or suggestions, now is the time to get comments in before I start weathering and fixing a few of the flaws I already know are there.

Most of this week will be spent remaking the tool rack that the garbage disposal ate. Making the antennas and sundry stowage bits. Then there's the question of the base. I have not built and finished a base before. I mean I started on for MAK kit but it's not done yet, so this will be an adventure!

Happy modeling and stay tuned for more from my bench!
