311 has a lot of art, and it's no secret we love two dimensional work. Every day we talk to people moving in to the Triangle who are looking to make their place a home - and 2D work has an important part to play in doing so.

New to the Triangle and have some lonely walls? Pair 'em with some local (and sometimes national!) love. Art really changes your home or business's vibe, and gives it soul, one piece at a time. πŸŒπŸŒ‡πŸŒƒβ€οΈ

Welcome to this week's "STUDIO OF THE WEEK". Today we will feature studio 8 / Vicki Rees and studio 7 which includes Dottie Shaftner, Susan Miller, Cheryl McCardle, and Ophelia Staton.

Vicki Rees / Studio 8
Featured work:
"The Three Shades" at the NCMA / oil / 24"x24" / $650
Vicki has always been fascinated by contrasts: the interplay of light and shadow, bright colors spotlighted against dark backgrounds, soaring heights ending in meadow streams. Today her inspiration is the beauty of the everyday and unusual angles, dramatic lighting, and nature's intricacies that capture her attention. Vicki's latest series is "City of Oaks", a tribute to her adopted hometown of Raleigh.
Vicki's email: [email protected]
Vicki's website: vlrees.com

Dottie Shaftner / Studio 7A
Featured work:
"Owl Baby" / Pastel / 16" x 16" / $275
Dottie creates art because it brings her joy. Her work usually involves some form of nature - painting birds and other small creatures, and use a variety of media to capture their beauty. Words can barely express the intertwining of vision, thought, and creative energy that drives Dottie's soul to recreate the amazing world around us.
Dottie's email: [email protected]
Dottie's website: shaftnerart.com

Susan Miller / Studio 7B
Featured work:
"Breath of Heaven" / Mixed Media Acrylic on Wood Panel / 12" x 16" / $289
Susan has been an art lover since she could hold a crayon and paint with her fingers. The beauty of the human face, especially the eyes, show depth of the soul and emotion. Staying true to herself, learning the dance of resistance and fear, embodying inspiration from nature, and observing the beauty and movement of color are inspirational factors from which Susan's art flows. Susan's desire is to truly brighten the world with her art.
Susan's email: [email protected]
Susan's website: susanmillerartist.com

Cheryl McCardle / Studio 7B
Featured work:
"Peace in the Valley" / Oil and Cold Wax / 16" x 16" / $275
When Cheryl creates, she loves to watch the art evolve and allow ideas from her subconscious to flow. It's a way of learning about herself through imagery. Cheryl approaches painting mostly intuitively and a response to her emotions. She uses acrylics, oils, and mixed media which allows her to create rich layers and textures. It is Cheryl's desire that when viewing her art, others enjoy the beauty and get a sense of that emotional freedom that she gets from her creative process.
Cheryl's email: [email protected]
Cheryl's website: cherylmccardleart.com

Ophelia Staton / Studio 7D
Featured work: "True Balance" / Acrylic & Graphite / 8" x 8" / $90
Creating gives Ophelia the freedom to use her gift. This freedom of creating is like no other she has ever experienced, and Ophelia's gift is to inspire others. She sees the process of painting as a journey and she is intrigued by the unknown of where each mark or stroke will take her. Ophelia's goal is to create a work of art that will engage the viewer and foster a dialogue, and that the viewer will be inspired to find his or her own connection with her work.

Hello friends of 311 Gallery! We're excited to bring you our weekly feature of "STUDIO OF THE WEEK". This week will we feature Linda Cromwell of Studio 4 and Studio 6. Studio 6 houses Jill Hunt, Lynda Harris, Mary Louise Ravese, Debra Singer-Harter, and Annie Kinney (we featured Annie's work 2 weeks ago).

Linda Cromwell, Studio 4:
Featured work:
Tulips in the Window / Oil / 36" x 36" / Price: $650
First and foremost is Linda's love of color, but also how oil paint feels, how you can move it around. Linda enjoys using the palette knife with different color combinations as well as the brush. Still life and floral paintings from life are the basic structure of her paintings. Linda's paintings are more about how the color and texture work together instead of trying to get the exact look of the subject matter.
Linda's email: [email protected]

Jill Hunt, Studio 6D
Featured work:
Head in the Clouds / Acrylic / 20" x 20" / Price: $300
Jill creates in a wide range of media, with a preference in oil and acrylic painting. Until recently, her art has been an exploration of diverse subject matter and styles, shifting between media and techniques that she felt best communicated what Jill wanted to share. Jill's current body of work has evolved to the abstract. Jill has rediscovered joy in the creative challenge of conveying her meaning in the absence of representational subject matter
Jill's email: [email protected]
Jill's website: JillHuntEclecticArt.com

Lynda Harris, Studio 6F/G
Featured work:
No Wake / Oil / 12" x 12" / Price: $245
Lynda enjoyed a 30 year career as a landscape architect before launching her career as an artist. Not having had any academic training in art, Lynda has taken many workshops to develop and grow her skills. She loves to paint in oils on small and medium sized surfaces using a "wet in wet" technique. Much of Lynda's art reflects upon her childhood vacations with family in western NC and her time spent as an adult in Raleigh. Much of Lynda's art reflects her memories of those bygone days and disappearing landscapes.

Lynda's website: lyndapharris FineArt. squarespace.com

Mary Louise Ravese, Studio 6C
Featured work:
Springtime in the South / Photography / 24" x 16" / $200
Photography represents the confluence of art and science for Mary. Artistically, it requires a heightened awareness of her surroundings - of the colors, shapes, textures, and lighting of her environment from the seemingly ordinary subject to the extraordinary of nature in action. Mary's favorite subjects are country landscapes, nature close-ups, interesting architectural details and abstracts. Mary's work is often described as "painterly". Mary feels that her most successful photographs are those that are not just technically good, but those that capture a moment of beauty or drama, images that evoke an emotional response in the viewer.
Mary Louise's email: [email protected]
Mary Louise's website: bellavistaphotography.com

Debra Singer-Harter, Studio 6B
Featured work:
Series One: Been Friends Forever / Acrylic / 8" x 16" / $149
Debra's artwork is about movement, texture, color, and people. Her subject matter is often people because they define our times and provide context to how we live today. She strives to bring their personality to the canvas along with the places they live and things they use. Debra has been strongly influenced by her immigrant grandparents' tales of their life since coming to America. In her abstracts, Debra uses broad moving brush strokes of paint and overlaying textures to create interest. Her goal is to keep the viewers' eyes busy; to see something new with each read.
Debra's email: [email protected]

311 Gallery, while closed, offers a Concierge service. If you are interested in viewing / purchasing any work, please feel free to contact the artist directly or Jim Hallenbeck ([email protected]).

I am finishing as many paintings I can over the next few weeks in preparation for my April show at the Clayton Center sponsered by Clayton Visual Artists. Ya know how busy you are this time of year? Well, yep, but I did something for myself to make sure I had a little retreat available for me throughout the holiday week: This year I'm doing an online retreat called Woman Unleashed that is absolutely free. Think movement, art, energy work and mini workshops all from home. The retreat has had over 65,000 women join from all over the world. The nice thing about is, if you cannot check out the workshops one day during this week, you will be able to play the replay anytime you want during the retreat. So I am thinking what fun to have this to do on the day after Christmas or before New Year's. And since it is quite an awesome retreat, you can check in on the workshops that appeal to you. It totally is NOT like anything else I have seen. Two of my favorite coaches are going to be workshop leaders also...Jennifer Lee and Kiala Givehand. Feeling like you want to be UNLEASHED??
