Roberson Dental, 1407 Hillsborough St., was just featured in a News and Observer Article on Saturday called Reviving a Queen Anne.
This project includes a full restoration and conversion of a 4000 SF historic house from transitional housing into a single dental practice. Built in 1912, The Brevard House was once part of a continuous corridor of stately homes between the State Capitol building and NC State University.
With accessibility a key factor, we integrated a ramp, made modifications to the bathrooms and the reconfigured the kitchen to make the building more usable for all. Small adjustments to openings, site improvements and lighting upgrades were also recommended. We have taken every step possible to maintain the building’s historic character while updating the interior to perform well for all users.
Update to a previously posted house - The McDaniel Residence is a home for a young and growing family located in the Country Club Hills area of Raleigh, NC. The site is one of the last remaining vacant lots available in a well-established neighborhood. The site is heavily wooded with exposed bedrock, varied topography, frontage along Crabtree Creek and a high voltage power easement running through the upper half of the property.
Presented with these challenges, our main goal of the design was to direct and focus views to take advantage of the beauty of the natural surroundings, giving the family a place of refuge within the confines of the city. Furthermore, the design attempts to gently float the house above the site, creating spaces that seems to be one with the trees, while avoiding possible conflicts with the bedrock and floodplain below.

Access Office Center is an interior upfit project for a speculative office building located off of Glenwood Avenue in close proximity to RDU airport. The client approached Vernacular Studio looking for a clean, modern design to define the public spaces of the building, primarily the elevator lobbies of the three story building which includes a dramatic double height entry lobby. To emphasize the vertical nature of the space and create a design that draws on the beauty of native North Carolina, the lobby was wrapped with layered vertical painted panels, an abstraction of the area’s forest scape. To draw the eye up and tie the upper and lower lobby spaces together, white tile defines the floor which echoes the walnut paneled balcony opening and the white floating ceiling above. The warmth of the central walnut paneled elevator core contrasts with the cool blue gray of the lobby walls, creating a balanced and calming sense ofplace. In addition to the lobby design, Vernacular Studio assisted in selecting both interior and exterior finishes to complement the overall aesthetic.
This small retail upfit began with a cold shell and an enthusiastic client who was determined to corner a niche maternity market on an extremely limited upfit budget. In an effort to reflect the simple yet modern aesthetic of the fashion merchandise, Vernacular Studio designed the interior architecture to be an extension of the retail merchandise. Through the use of well conceived retail design principals, the strategic layering of lighting, and the incorporation of built-in displays and fixtures, the store’s interior is able to remain open and uncluttered to provide the consumer with a shopping experience that reduces “retail fatigue” and thus increases volume and rate of sales. At a cost of $35/sf, this store demonstrates the cost effectiveness and design opportunities of utilizing inexpensive materials in a thoughtful and creative manner.
