Claudette Colvin by SRG 🎨

My 6th portrait is of 15 year old civil rights activist, Claudette Colvin.

We are all familiar with Rosa Parks and the crucial role she played in desegregation, but did you know that Claudette Colvin was actually the first person to refuse giving up her seat to a white woman & Rosa Parks’ demonstration was based on Claudette’s?

At 15 years old, Claudette knew what was being asked of her was wrong. She refused, stood her ground, & was physically removed from the bus.

The NAACP decided to use someone else for the face of their desegregation movement bc they said Claudette was too young, her complexion too dark, & she had become pregnant.

Claudette was finally heard & her fight finally recognized openly when her case was brought to court in 1956 as part of Browder v. Gayle - which ultimately ruled the bus system to be unconstitutional.

Claudette’s strength & bravery are a powerful reminder that you’re never too young, too small, too dark, too ANYTHING to make a difference in this world 🌟

“… as a teenager, I kept thinking, Why don’t the adults around here just say something? Say it so that they know we don’t accept segregation? I knew then and I know now that, when it comes to justice, there is no easy way to get it. You can’t sugarcoat it. You have to take a stand and say, ‘This is not right.’ And I did.” -americanswhotellthetruth.org

For Black History Month in February & Women’s History Month in March I’m doing a personal project of learning about different women who have made an impact on our world culturally, politically, & from a human perspective, and creating portraits of them in my style of drawing

Any suggestions on who I should learn about & draw next?

Doechii by SRG 🎨

My 5th portrait is of artist Doechii (Jaylah Ji’mya Hickman) 🌟

In 2020 she was fired from her retail job and in 2025, at age 26, she became the third female ever to receive a Grammy for Best Rap Album.

As a young Black bisexual woman, she is a true testament to staying true to who you are, loving & embracing your most authentic self, and following your passions & dreams in spite of the world trying to push you down.

*2nd pic: Her portrait stands so beautifully on its own so I made a version with a solid red background to give space for her to be the sole focus.

Sonia Sanchez by SRG 🎨

My 4th portrait is of Sonia Sanchez, a true leader in the areas of arts, Black equality, & education in the 60s/70s 🌟

She brought Black Studies to a university level, introduced the first Black Women’s Studies course, achieved MULTIPLE awards & accolades for her incredible poetry, & was a huge driving force behind the Black Arts Movement.

BLACK ARTS MOVEMENT: this is something to definitely take a couple minutes & read about. This cultural fight to give a real voice to the African American artists in our country laid the groundwork for some of the most important developments in the arts.

Laverne Cox by SRG 🎨

My 3rd portrait is of actress & activist, Laverne Cox.

Laverne is an inspiration in so many ways. From a young age she knew who she was & what made her feel whole, but the world did their best to hold her down. She fought hard for the confidence, the courage, & the comfort in being true to herself no matter what.

Her journey to a place where she receives opportunities & recognition was not easy, & that deserves to be acknowledged in our celebration of her success & the impact she has on our world.

“I was told many times that I wouldn’t be able to have a mainstream career as an actor because I’m trans, because I’m black, and here I am…And it feels really good.” -womenshistory.org

&

“not everybody who is born feels that their gender identity is in alignment with what they’re assigned at birth…if someone needs to express their gender in a way that is different, that is okay…That’s what people need to understand, that it’s okay and that if you are uncomfortable with it, then you need to look at yourself.” -womenshistory.org

Ida B. Wells by SRG 🎨

My 2nd portrait is of Ida B. Wells.

It’s tough to fit every courageous and impactful thing that this incredible woman did into a small caption like this.

Ida was born into slavery, emancipated at age 3, & went on to dedicate her life to ending the racial discrimination & violence that existed (exists) in the world around her through journalism, advocacy, & always standing up for what she believed was right.

“While she did not live to see the civil rights movement in its glory, she laid the foundations for its radical activism with her anti-lynching efforts and journalism that echoed collective critical action within the black community.” -womenshistory.org

Take five minutes out of your day today to read about Ida’s life, struggles, successes, pains, & legacy.
