Providence World Music Presents Kotoko Brass live at Roger Williams Park Boatlawn House on Saturday July 25th, 2026 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

About Kotoko Brass:

Inspired by the traditional drum rhythms of Ghana, Kotoko Brass has created a unique, joyful, and improvisational style of West African dance music described by the Boston Globe as“propulsive, infectious party music”. The drums provide the heart and soul of Kotoko Brass —merging syncopated African percussion polyrhythms with hard-hitting dance grooves on the drumset. The horns blend traditional sounds of New Orleans with the famous West African brass band sound heard from Ghana to Nigeria, and the keyboard, guitar, and bass evoke classicAfrican and Caribbean styles of highlife, afrobeat, and reggae. A celebratory and energetic synthesis of music, people, and cultures from around the world, Kotoko Brass features musicians from Ghana, Antigua, Japan, and the United States playing together in unity. Kotoko Brass has shared the stage with Angelique Kidjo, Red Baraat, Femi Kuti, the California Honeydrops, Vieux Farka Toure, Innov Gnawa, Take 6, the Boston Pops, Rubblebucket, and more.

Please join us tomorrow for a wonderful evening of great music. We are excited to welcome to perform at July 2nd from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.

The Willie J Laws Band is one of the most notable Blues acts with a modern funky style that’s uniquely its own. The band’s sound includes deep Texas roots music, add some funk, and jazz influenced bass patterns, and the influence of various Afro-Caribbean drum beats, a genre-bending sound tempered with a groove from Motown, Memphis, Muscle Shoals, the Gulf Coast of Texas, and New Orleans. This isn’t strictly Blues, much of it is original music with it’s own sound and tempo. You will enter the Willie J Laws Band musical train, cover a varied terrain with its assorted musical sounds. It’s an exciting, fast moving train, and you will most definitely enjoy the ride!

Providence World Music Series Returns May 7 at 195 District Park. Join us!!!

Providence World Music Series returns for its 8th season on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 PM at 195 District Park.

The opening concert features the acclaimed Eastern Medicine Singers, joined by Malian kora virtuoso Yacouba Diabate.

Presented by PVD World Music, the series celebrates musical traditions as diverse as the diverse communities of Providence.

The 2026 season is supported by RISCA, the Rhode Island Foundation, the Papitto Foundation, and Rhode Island Humanities, with curatorial support from 195 District Park.
