A recurring approach I used making this chair series was starting a painting and letting it organically go in its own direction, but knowing at some point I would imprison the painting into a chair. I found it amusing trying to trap freedom of expression in a mundane object of utility. Also, just to clarify, over the last few years, I’ve talked and painted a lot around mental health and emotions. The chair series is an attempt at pure avoidance from the constant self imposed mental health scrutiny that traps me in obsessive introspective spin cycles. Most chairs are used for sitting, these chairs are used for avoiding. Which as you know, always ends well.
