The substantia nigra contains specialized nerve cells that produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain coordinate smooth, controlled movement.

In Parkinson’s disease, these dopamine-producing neurons gradually become damaged and die. As dopamine levels fall, communication within the brain’s movement circuits becomes disrupted.

Common symptoms include:

* 🤲 Tremor, often beginning in one hand
* 🐢 Slowness of movement (bradykinesia)
* 🦵 Muscle stiffness or rigidity
* 🚶 Shuffling gait and smaller steps
* ⚖️ Problems with balance and posture
* 😐 Reduced facial expression
* ✍️ Smaller handwriting
* 🔉 Softer or quieter speech

Parkinson’s can also cause non-movement symptoms, including constipation, sleep problems, depression or anxiety, reduced sense of smell, fatigue, and cognitive changes.
